Lady Mavericks pick up wins at Glasgow Showcase

The North Country Lady Mavericks opened the season with a pair of wins last weekend at the Glasgow Class C Showcase.

The team, which finished the 2020 postseason as the Class C Runner-up, defeated the Plentywood Wildcats 41-35 in their opening game of the season on Friday, December 3. Then they defeated the Richey-Lambert Fusion 58-17 on Saturday, December 4.

The Mavericks are scheduled to travel to Lewistown for the Fergus Holiday this weekend to square off against Fort Benton, who defeated the Mavs 74-60 for the Class C State Title at the state tournament last March. The game against Fort Benton is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Friday, December 10, at Fergus High School.

They will also face Winifred/Roy, who the Mavs defeated in the semifinals at state last year. That game is scheduled for Saturday, December 11, at 10:30 a.m.

"Fort Benton lost a lot to graduation but will still be a tough team and Winifred/Roy has size and their point guard back so they will be a great test for us on Saturday morning," Coach Erickson said. "We feel very fortunate to have been able to pick up such great pre-season games that will test us every possession and help us find our strengths and weaknesses moving forward into the season."

In the Lady Mavericks' win over Plentywood, Paige Wasson led all scorers with 18 points. and 5 rebounds. Teagan Erickson finished the game with 11 pts., 14 rebounds, and seven blocked shots, and Jaycee Erickson finished with eight points, four rebounds, and assists.

In the Mavericks win ovre Richey-Lambert, the Mavs were led by J. Erickson who had 16 points, three assists, and three steals. Wasson had eight points, and T. Erickson had eight points, eight rebounds, and three blocks. The team played nine varsity players, eight of which scored.

"I thought we looked pretty tough for our opening weekend of play, the girls got after it on both ends of the floor and did a lot of really good things," Coach Erickson said. "We also came away with several things we need to improve on and will get back to work this week before heading down to the Lewistown Showcase where we will have a shot at two more teams that we faced at the State Tournament last year, Fort Benton and Winifred/Roy."
