Lady Mavericks Pick Up Win Over Scobey

The North Country Lady Mavericks basketball team defeated the Scobey Lady Spartans 51-31 in their first action of 2024 on Saturday, January 6, in Saco.

North Country is scheduled to face the Lustre Christian Lady Lions on Friday, January 12, in Lustre at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Mavericks are also scheduled to host the Nashua Lady Porcupines on Saturday, January 13, in Hinsdale at 5:30 p.m.

Lustre Christian will be one of North Country's toughest opponents, boasting an 8-1 record. Lustre's lone loss came to the Circle Lady Wildcats on Saturday. The score was 52-46.

In the Maverick's win over Scobey, the Lady Mavericks led wire-to-wire. Teagan Erickson was the lead-scorer with 19 points. Erickson also had five rebounds and two blocks.

Paige Wasson had nine points and three steals. Shelbi LaBrie had seven points, six assists, and three steals. Josie Brown had seven points and two steals. Kendall Scheffelmear had six points, four steals and two blocks.

"They were fun to play because they weren't just pushovers," LaBrie said of Scobey. "They were very aggressive, so it was nice. Good defense."

The Lady Mavericks forced 21 turnovers and had 18 points off of those turnovers. North Country scored 14 points in transition, while limiting Scobey to two points.

"We just switched up a lot of our defenses and offenses. We were just really aggressive, trying to move the ball well, get in their passing lanes, and put a lot of pressure on them to frustrate them."

The Lady Mavericks made 15-of-24 (62.5%) two-point field goals, and 2-of-7 (28.6%) from three point range. The team made 15-of-22 (68.2%) of their free throws.

The Mavericks outscored the Lady Spartans 13-6 in the first quarter, 12-3 in the second quarter, 14-11 in the third quarter, and 12-11 in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Mavericks were busy during Winter Break, working on the intricacies of their game.

"We just really broke down our zone and man offense and defense," LaBrie said. "We worked on trying to get new looks on opponents. We fixed a couple of things and tried to open things up a little more."
