    JJ "Jack" Smith was a member of the Phillips County community and was involved heavily in the cattle industry. After his passing in July of 2007, the family wanted to do something in JJ's honor. After some discussion the family felt that they would like to honor JJ by giving an award to the Grand Champion Steer Of Merit carcass. PC Extension member, Ann Shettel, presents SOM winner Parker Mortenson with a check for $100.00 in memory of JJ "Jack" Smith....

    The M-ettes had a bittersweet weekend in Chinook, where the Sugarbeeters hosted the Chinook Invitational.     The Mustangs’ first game of the season gave Malta fans plenty to look forward to this season as the Mustangs nearly escaped Worden with a win within the final ten seconds of the game. The team ultimately lost the game 28-27.     The Third Annual Nile Sanctioned Phillips County Ranch Rodeo is in the books. Eight ranches from near and a far participated in events identical to tasks they perform on a near daily basis. The event was held at the Trafton Park Arena in Malta last Sunday. After five events, which included branding, trailering, doctoring, wild cow milking and bronc riding it was the Salveson Ranch who took home the $1500 prize with a score of 35.     The North Country Maverick's season opened with a rocky start in their first regular season action last week as the team fell to the Poplar Indians last Thursday in Poplar and against Scobey in their home opener on Friday in Saco. Poplar has been off to a great start this season, showing improvement at the Malta invitiational on August 28. "They have definitely gotten a lot better," said Mavericks Head Coach Kathy Siroky.
