Malta City Council receives new park tables from Walleyes

At the Malta City Council Meeting, James Brown thanked Mayor Shyla Jones and the members of the council for naming him as Public Works Director.

"I am humbled, exhilarated, scared and a little bit of everything," he said. "But I think we are going to have a lot of fun together."

Brown informed the council that work is picking up at the City Offices. He said that the crew has been cutting and piling cardboard in preparation for having it hauled away by a company out of North Dakota. Mayor Jones added that the company will take trial loads out of the state and if it tests out okay the company will come back and take all the cardboard away.

Brown said that a clean-up project on the dyke near the Milk River is complete and that 44 cracks in the caulking were found. He said that caulking is on the way and that the work will be completed soon.

Brown said that the City pool is undergoing maintenance which includes some showers that need to be worked on and that the pool needs to be primed, painted and have the lanes painted on before the water goes in. Mayor Jones explained that the lanes were previously marked in the pool with tiles and Brown added that the tiles were cracked and falling apart. The new paint for the lane lines will work much better than the tiles, Brown said.

Brown said that all the sprinklers at the pump houses have been turned on and the alleys in Trafton Park are being bladed. He said that the sweeper has been hitting town parking lots and that avenues will be next on the sweeping list.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, Malta Walleyes Unlimited President Don Voegel informed the council that the Walleyes will be donating 15-Lifetime tables to the City Hall to replace the older, heavier tables. He said that there are 13 eight-foot tables and two six-foot tables.

"We really appreciate that as a city because those tables are so much easier to move than the old, heavy wooden ones," Mayor Jones said. "We appreciate the Walleyes doing that each year. You guys have been a great partner with the city and you've done a lot of projects within the community and we appreciate it very much."

In the new business portion of the meeting, Mark Hebert was approved and appointed as the Public Member of the Phillips County Transits Board, replacing Curtis Starr until the end of the term which expires on June 30.

First State Bank has requested a street closure for June 7 in connection with Car Show Weekend. The closure will effect First Avenue and First Street. The Town Council approved the request.
