Still undefeated, 6-0 Malta looks to defend home court against Rocky Boy

The Malta M-ettes have anticipated playing the Wolf Point Lady Wolves all season, because the Wolves were supposed to be a tough opponent in 2B basketball.

Instead of a close game, Malta pounded the Lady Wolves 55-21 last Friday in Malta.

By the time the first quarter was over, Malta had already established a 26-2 lead.

One would think the team would be rusty after break, but Senior Guard Rebecca Smith knew why the team came out in rare form.

" A lot of blood runs! A lot," Rebecca said.

It was a drill Coach Nate Hammond put the team through over and over again.

" It's when you run from the base line to half court, back to the baseline, then half-court, baseline back to the far free throw line, back to the baseline and then full court," Rebecca said.

Nearly every player saw at least ten minutes on the court that night and every player looked as though they were in tip-top shape, not giving up ten points in any quarter.

"I was pretty impressed, our goal was to keep them under 20, so it was pretty good," M-ette point guard Sophia Stiles said.

Stiles scored 16 points and had five steals that game.

Darby Schye scored 11 points in the victory and had seven rebounds.

Hailey Nicholson scored nine and had four steals.

Kelsey Kuehn had a team lead 10 rebounds and scored eight points.

Marley Manoukian had four points.

Kaityln Smith, Rebecca Smith and Jada Nicholson scored two points a piece. Markelle Lett added one point and six rebounds.

Whether Malta played Starters or bench players, the defense was absolutely stifling.

The Lady Wolves rarely had an easy shot and when they did, it didn't fall their way.

The Lady Wolves were one of seven (14 percent) from three point range and eight for 48 (16 percent) in total shots.

Malta was 21-51 from the field and 0-7 from behind the arc.

The win wasn't anything new to Malta who has owned 2B basketball for a long time, but the girls took nothing for granted that night.

"It (the win) means the world to us," Rebecca said. "It's one of the most important things for us because we just have to take it one game at a time."

Malta faced stiffer competition from the Havre Lady Blue Ponies, who they defeated earlier this season (62-43).

"We just have to come out with the same intensity that we always do," Rebecca said. "Just work our butts off on defense and the defense will go into offense and we will do our best on offense too."

In their second clash with Havre on Saturday in Malta, the M-ettes won again, with the end score being 57-45.

The M-ettes were led by Stiles, who scored 22 points and racked up 10 rebounds. In addition to her double-double she had six assists and four steals.

Nicholson scored 16 points.

Schye added nine.

Both Manoukian and Lett had four.

Manoukian added five assists and five steals.

Kuehn added two points.
