Malta takes ninth in Glasgow Meet

The Malta Swim Team is off to a great start this season after the team ended the third meet of their season.

The Malta swimmers took ninth place at the Glasgow meet, which is impressive considering the team only had 15 at the meet. There were 269 swimmers present amongst 10 teams.

The team finished seventh in relay races.

"The weekend went well for us really," Coach Donnie Lynn told the PCN. "All we want is for them to keep dropping time every week. Almost all of them dropped time."

Grant O'Brien led the team in individual scoring with 34 points in his three events.

He finished first in the Men 15 and Over 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:24.29. He finished third in the 200 IM with a time of 3:03.66 and third in the 100 Fly with a time of 1:30.57.

"I don't like singling out people because we are a team but Grant O'Brien had the best times of his life," Coach Lynn said. "He had a real strong meet."

His sister, Jillian O'Brien, scored 32 points. She took second in the Women 13-14 100 Breaststroke with a time 1:39.84. She took third in both the 200 IM with a time of 3:30.27 and 100 Fly with a time of 1:46.88.

The team welcomed it's assistant coach Brooke Leader.

Leader, grew up in Big Sandy, is a sophomore at Southwestern Oregon College, but spent the first six years of her life, here in Malta, where her family is originally from.

"It's like being in a new place, I don't really remember a lot (about Malta)," Leader said.

She is the daughter of Daniel and the granddaughter of Leonard and Margaret Leader.

She placed at National in every event she swam in during her freshmen year, which is impressive.

The Malta Swim Team has warmed up quickly to Leader.

"Even the first day that I was here, they listened really, really well," Leader said. "They're all trying really hard."
