100 years ago

March 16, 1916

Postmistress appointed for Malta

It is officially announced from Washington D.C. that Ms. Nathalie Patton of this city has received the appointment from President Wilson for postmistress at this place and the appointment has already been confirmed by the senate.

Miss Patton is a popular bookkeeper and cashier in the J.F. Kilduff store and had the Democrats looked for many months they could not have found a better or more capable person to handle the office here than the one selected. This will be surprising news to a few, who thought they had the inside dope on the appointment.

Zortman News

Mr. James Griffen, one of our old timers, was thrown from his horse Sunday and died from the injuries.

Big dance at the schoolhouse hall St. Patrick's Day in the evening.

William T. Kellerman has purchased Eagle Hall and is converting it into an up-to-the-minute garage.

Pete Zortman, one of the old timers of this section of the state, was renewing acquaintances in Malta this week.

Hinsdale News

In common with most of the towns along the Great Northern in this neck o' the woods, Hinsdale is to have an up-to-date hotel. It will be erected as soon as weather conditions warrant by the businessmen of that place.

March 13, 1941

Wineman is new commissioner

Robert M. "Bob" Wineman of Dodson became Phillips County Commissioner from the Western District when he was appointed by Judge John Hurly to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Dudley Jones. Jones resigned to become Warden of the state penitentiary at Deer Lodge and has already taken over his new duties.

Kindergarten organizing rhythm band

Kindergarten students under the direction of Mrs. George Hall, instructor, are making splendid progress in the newly organized rhythm band and have learned two tunes, "London Bridge" and "Where or Where has My Little Lamb Gone." Friday, the band played their numbers with Mrs. Clarence Flesche accompanying them at the piano and their performance was so commendable that a public appearance may soon be announced.

Kindergarten enrollees number 17 and are Jean Anderson, Alice Cauffman, Sharon Corry, Robert Flesche, Ronald Hall, Jeanne Stoll Hays, Shirley Knutson, Yvonne Kay Lesselyong, Monica Losleben, James Mebust, Paul Merkowitz, Jimmy Murray, Phyllis Porter, Gail Seim, Sandra Setzer, Paul Snyder and Janet Lee Westdal.

March 24, 1966

Pfc. Max Knudsen killed in action in Viet Nam

Pfc. Max Knudsen, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth G. Knudsen of Saco, was killed in action near Saigon, Viet Nam, last Wednesday, March 16, where he had been stationed since Feb. 25. Knudsen spent two weeks leave at his parents in February before going to Billings where he took a plane for California and Saigon.

He was born Nov. 4, 1944, at Saco. He was a graduate of Saco High School in 1962 and attended the college at the National Electronics Institute in Denver, Colo., for one year.

Four men join services

Two married men and two single men have recently entered the armed services.

John Korsbeck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Korsbeck, enlisted in the army and entered active duty March 16. His wife is the former Judy Charlton.

Max Robinson, a former resident of Malta who moved to Oklahoma, was inducted in the army March 16. He will receive his basic training at Ft. Ord, Calif., His wife is the former Celia Slater of Malta.

Daniel Barry McNamara, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald McNamara, was inducted into the Marine Corps and left March 16 for Butte where he will receive further assignment.

Ralph Winkle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Britten Winkle, was inducted into the army and also left March 16 for Fort Ord.

March 20, 1991

Veteran principal is headed for retirement

After 41 years in education, 26 of them in the Malta School District, Elementary School Principal George Knudsen has announced his plans to retire at the end of his current contract on June 14.

Although he is still a few years away from age 65, the principal told the PCN he decided it was time to step out. Knudsen said he has no specific plans for retirement but said he might like to try his hand as an educational consultant.

Nate Hammond qualifies for state Geography Bee

Nate Hammond, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Hammond, an eighth grade student at Whitewater has qualified to participate in the Montana State Geography Bee and moved one-step closer to a $25,000 college scholarship.

Skiff wins Red Bandana Award

Greg Skiff of Malta was awarded the Red Bandana Award at the 36th Milk River Wagon Train Nut and Gut Feed held Saturday, March 11. Bosses for 2006 will be Tom Niebur, wagon boss, Jerey McEwen, trail boss and Rebel Levesque, secretary-treasurer.

M-ettes take fourth place at 'B' State

A young Malta M-ette squad earned their first state tournament wins of their career and finished in fourth place Saturday night in Belgrade to cap a 24-5 season.

Kelly Pankratz, a junior, and was named to the All-Tournament First Team and Laramie Schwenke earned honorable mention honors.
