Gleanings from June 14th's City Council Meeting

Editors note: taken from Malta City Clerk Lorie Bond's minutes.

During the last Malta City Council meeting (June 14) during the Communications from the Mayor, Malta Mayor Shyla Jones informed council that longtime City Works member Tim Halser will be retiring at the end of September and the City will be planning a retirement party for him before his final day.

During Department Reports, Public Works Director Jim Truelove reported he has ordered dryland turf and will be planting it soon at Hillcrest Park. Director Truelove reported that the City Crew has been adding gravel in some alleys around town and blading will follow at a later date.

Mayor Jones reported that an employee of a Malta Company was driving an excavator on City streets which caused a significant amount of damage. She added that the company will be on the hook for repair costs. Mayor Jones also reported that local volunteer groups around town have been sent letters about the changes with how they can serve food on City grounds and alerting them to the Safe Serve Classes all people handling food will need to complete.

Also during Department reports, Mayor Jones announced that the Malta Park’s and Rec Department has been doing a great job painting and making repairs to the baseball dugout and bleachers in Malta parks.

During New Business, Mayor Jones presented the Council with a request that the City sponsor the Fourth of July fireworks (in conjunction with money raised from the RadioThon hosted by KMMR.) The board agreed.

Mayor Jones reported that she recently had a conversation with a member of the Montana Department of Environmental Quality about the clean-up at the old airport/ Drag Strip. She was told that racers can park their car-trailers on contaminated areas but, at this time, can not camp there. After much deliberation, it was determined to suspend the clean up for now.

Mayor Jones reported that Malta City Lifeguards would assist in painting some of the yellow curbs around town and also said she had received information from Glasgow on how they deal with junk-cars parked around that town. Mayor Jones asked Clerk Bond to work on an ordinance similar to the one in place in Glasgow.
