Phillips County Motorsports Event Two

Phillips County Motorsports held their second weekend of this season on June 18 and 19 despite the high winds blowing against the racers.

Schultz of Swift Current, Sask., won Saturday's Super Pro class with an elapsed time of 5.91 seconds, reaction time of .2273 and dial-in of 5.86.

Havre's Travis Turner was runner up in the SuperPro with a time of 6.16, reaction time of .2366 and a dial-in time of 6.15.

"It was working good and the driver didn't do too bad," Schultz said. "The driver wasn't as consistent as the car but we got it done."

Schultz drives a 1971 Chevy Nova with an alcohol injected 496 engine. It's name is "Boss Eh Nova," a play on words that came from Eydie Gorme's Blame it on the Bossa Nova and the Canadian use of "Eh."

The car reaches near 120 miles per hour in the eighth-mile race at the Hi-Line Dragstrip. It can also do the quarter-mile at 147 mph and will reach the line at 9.18 seconds.

Schultz started racing at the Hi-Line Dragstrip seven years ago and last Saturday marked his only win in his class.

"This is my fourth season in this car. I was in pro before," he said. "It felt awesome."

He was very appreciative of his car and his pit crew, which consists of his granddaughter Jacksyn Schultz.

"She makes sure my tires are at the right inflation, my fuel tank is full, and that my belts are done up properly," Schultz said.

Jacksyn, who has been helping Ron for years, had no idea things would go Ron's way. For her it was just business as usual.

"It's fun," Jacksyn said.

Schultz also mentioned his wife Luanne, who takes care of the camp, especially while they are on the road.

Schultz represents Phat Boyz Racing, which consists of himself, his son Cordell, Dustin ViPond, Rayce Schultz and Hailey ViPond.

Prior to his recent racing history Ron raced in Saskatchewan in the 70's.

"I got married," he said. "Ran out of money, bought a house and just got back into about eight years ago.

His family lives near a local airport in Saskatchewan.

"There was a group of fellows that started drag racing at the airport," he said.

He then looked at his wife and mentioned that it was happening and they weren't a part of the action. She then mentioned that he should start racing again..

He re-started racing in the Sportsman class, but that would change over time.

"You just get the feeling that you want to got faster," Schultz said. "You start off in sportsman and everything's working good and then you figure you need more power, more speed and move into Pro and then soon you'll step into Super Pro."

Schultz is dedicating this racing season to now gone Oliver Mickey, who is his daughter in law's father. Mickey fell to cancer.

"This season is for him," Schultz said.
