Swim Team headed to Glasgow

The Malta Swim team is no doubt, hoping that the weather at this weekend’s meet in Glasgow will have better conditions than last week’s meet in Plentywood.

“The Glasgow meet is pretty popular,” Malta Head Coach Cassie Pratt told the PCN. “It’s a good meet that has a nice pool for the swimmers and usually the water’s pretty nice.”

Heavy storms ran through Plentywood at the time that the Plentywood Swim Meet was running, with Saturday hosting the worst of the rain. Still, Malta swam well last weekend.

“The meet went really well,” Coach Pratt said. “The delays were pretty hard on the swimmers but we got through it. Every body improved on their times the second day. I was proud of my kids. Everybody swam hard regardless of the weather.”

Jillian O’Brien had a strong meet nearly pulling a hat trick. She won the Women 13-14 by posting a time of 1:37.69 in the 100 fly. O’Brien also won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:37.66. She took second in the 200 IM with a time of 3:22.58. She scored a total of 40 points.

“She had a wonderful, wonderful day,” Coach Pratt said.

Connor Tuss scored 33 points for the team, placing second in both the Men 11-12 50 breaststroke and 50 backstroke with times of 49.52 and 49.92 respectively. He took fourth in the 200 IM with a time of 3:46.71.

“He worked hard, he improved on everything that I was telling him to do,” Coach Pratt said. “Just extending his arms and getting a better backstroke. He pulled them out of the water and got second place.”

Darrow Messerly scored 33 points with a first place finish in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 43.84. He took third in the 200 IM with a time of 3:32.56 and fourth in the 50 back with a time of 48.11.

Ella Schye scored 26 points with a third place finish in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:18.24. She finished fifth in both the 50 free and 100 breaststroke with times of 34.59 and 1:40.87 respectively.

“Her 100 freestyle was a new stroke that we were trying this weekend and she did a wonderful job,” Coach Pratt said. “I’m very proud of her and the effort that she put into that.”

The Women’s 13-14 team placed second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:28.75 and second in the 200 medley with a time of 2:45.58.

Coach Pratt is hoping the team can place at this weekend’s meet that should feature calmer weather.
