Teams tie at 25th annual golf tourney

The 25th annual Ezzies - First State Bank Golf Tournament is in the books after a beautiful day at Marian Hills Golf Course last Saturday.

The four person team scramble event ended in a two team tie between Team #10 and Team #3. Team #10 consisted of Troy Azure, Trevor Simser, Gloria Jacobson and Mike Lang. Team #3 consisted of Craig Stiles, Tanner Kelly, Shane Anderson and Nancy Salsbery.

The PCN caught up with Kelly after his team tied for first place. He shared the key to his team’s performance was hitting the ball straight and making putts.

He admitted that he hadn’t touched his clubs in a month.

Kelly said that his whole team played great but he also thought the golf conditions were ideal.

“The weather was great and the course was in great condition,” Kelly said.

It turns out that Saturday wasn’t the first time that Kelly had been a part of a winning team at the event. Being that Kelly was a part of the winning team, he gained bragging rights at his place of work – First State Bank.

Kelly picked up golf at a young age but didn’t play competitively until his move to Malta a few years ago.

“It’s fun to go play with friends,” Kelly said. “When I moved to Malta it was the first time I had played in tournaments. Working at the bank I felt I had to show up and play.”

Simser, of Team #10, also started golfing at a young age.

“I’ve golfed since I was about seven years old,” he said. “It’s a generational thing. Dad golfs, mom golfs, I golf, my sister golfs and my five year old son comes out here and golfs. This golf course gives opportunity for everybody in the community to come out and play golf on one of the nicest golf courses in Montana.”

“It feels pretty good,” Simser said. “We had a pretty good team effort. Gloria played pretty well, hit the ball really well. Troy made two really good putts that got us into the money. We just played an all around good round on a really nice golf course.”

Simser gave props to Cory Shelhamer who does the grounds work for Marian Hills Golf Course.

“Thanks for Cory Shelhamer and the relentless work he does to keep this golf course as nice as he can,” Simser said. “He does a great job doing it.”
