Mavs go 1-2 last weekend

The Mavericks had a rough outing last week losing two games to Poplar and Scobey but winning a game against Brockton. The team will have another tough weekend as the team will look to challenge Malta in Malta Thursday, take on Lustre Christian in Saco on Friday and travel to Harlem to take on the Wildcats on Saturday.

In the team’s win against Brockton on Friday, October 7 in Saco, the Mavs won 3-0. The scores were 25-6, 25-15 and 25-11.

The team was led by Mickayla Johnson who had five kills. Sarah Boucher had three kills. Kayleigh Cummings had six aces. Mia Rimoldi had five assists and Casity Boucher had four assists.

The varsity team played in the first set, but then noticing the vast age difference between the two squads, Coach Barry Malone decided to bring in the junior varsity team for the second and third sets.

“It wasn’t a very good match,” Coach Malone said. “They had a whole different team with a bunch of young kids trying to salvage a team. Therefore it wasn’t much of a match.”

The game gave the JV players a chance to play while the varsity team was able to rest.

In the team’s loss to Poplar on Thursday, October 6 in Poplar, the Mavs lost 3-0. The scores were 25-19, 25-19 and 25-14.

The Mavericks were led by Johnson who had eight kill and four blocks. Jada Sudbrack and Bailey Funk both had three aces. Sudbrack had 13 digs and Boucher had 12 assists.

“There was a fair number of unforced errors but Poplar has improved so much that they put it on you to dig up everything cleanly,” Coach Malone said. “We’re still not able to dig up balls the best that you can.”

Coach Malone believes that his team has improved but teams have been able to adjust to them.

“We just have to keep playing a lot harder and move without the ball,” Coach Malone said.

In the team’s loss to Scobey on Saturday, the Mavericks were able to force a fourth game but the team fell in the fourth game. The scores were: 19-25, 16-25, 25-16 and 18-25.

Johnson led North Country with 13 kills. Boucher, Johnson and Sudbrack each had one block. Sudrack had four aces and 13 digs. Boucher had 22 assists.

“We were able to take one from Scobey and that’s what we have to get used to, playing four or five sets per match, when we are just used to playing three,” Coach Malone said noting that the team hasn’t had a game go into the fifth set this season.

The team will have a tough task this weekend taking on Malta, Lustre and Harlem.

“We have gotten better but the last time we’ve met Malta, we helped them out and beat ourselves and I don’t think we came to play as hard as we could have,” Coach Malone said.
