November Malta City Council Recap

At the only Malta City Council meeting for the Month, held on November 7, Malta Mayor Shyla Jones informed the Council that the Malta’s landfill will now be closed on Saturday’s due to a staff shortage during the Communications from the Mayor portion of the meeting.

Mayor Jones also told the Council that the cleanup at the old airport was starting with Shayne Bishop pulling fence the second week of November. Mayor Jones informed Council that the holes have to be open at least 14 days while waiting for soil samples of cleaned area to be processed.

During the Committee Reports portion of the meeting, Public Works Director Jim Truelove informed Council that the Works Crew will continue to run the leaf truck as long as weather permits.

Assistant Parks and Recreation Manager Julia Tatafu informed Council that the winners of the Adult Co Ed Volleyball league would be crowned on November 22 (see the PCN sports section this week) and added that the first session of the Tiny Tots recreation was finished, the second session started on November 9 (to run through December 14) and the next session will start in January and have it’s time changed to 11 a.m. until noon in order to give different children a chance to attend.

Manager Tatafu said the new adult exercise classes started at the begin of November and was well attended. The Parks and Rec team are working on getting a class started in December. She said that the children’s dodge ball program drew 80 local children to participate and that Parks and Rec is looking to start a youth basketball league and, as requested, an adult coed dodge ball league and perhaps an indoor soccer league.

Lastly, in other comments, a Malta resident living on Highway 2 East requested a speed reduction near Dairy Queen. Mayor Jones said she had already started working on a speed reduction.
