Malta City Council meeting recap

The Malta City Council held their bi-weekly meeting last Tuesday, April 23, it was a meeting that lasted only thirty-minutes and featured only one New Business item.

The Board approved the minutes from previous City Council Meeting held on Tuesday, April 9. The Boards also approved the Review Audit Committee for Pay of Claims.

During the department report portion of the meeting, Malta Public Works Department Head Jim Truelove announced that the City Crew had to repair a service line on the east side of front street, mentioning that a fitting was repaired.

The repairs to the fitting were needed due to the constant heavy truck traffic that passes through the area. Truelove also mentioned that the crew will be pouring a slab of concrete to help with the weight of the aforementioned truck traffic.

It was announced that the crew will begin alley cleanup. The project may require two haul trucks, a loader, and crew. The crew has also made 43 bails of cardboard and only 20 more are needed in order to order transport.

The Montana Department of Environmental Quality made a surprise visit to the City dump and Mayor Demarais and Truelove both agreed the one a year unannounced inspection went well.

Truelove also announced that the garbage trucks that gave the crew issues last year is up and running well. The 621 loader that has needed repair has been diagnosed with a bad injector pump. Truelove told the mayor and council that he is awaiting the cost of repair.

The Trafton Park Bathrooms will soon be open to the public.

The bathrooms came up in the New Business portion of the meeting as the only item on the agenda. The council unanimously voted to participate in the SFY 2020 City Park Rest Area Program, a program that would help reimburse for park repairs and improvements made to the rest area in Trafton Park.

The city’s reimbursement submission would include reimbursement for the rest area’s upkeep as well as reimbursement for cleaning supplies and for the lights installed recently. The suggested improvements for the park included automatic doors, that will help with ADA Compliance.

Mayor Demarais praised the improvements to the rest area building, which included the new roof and lighting.

Earlier in the meeting Mayor Demarais announced that there were no new updates pertaining to the Water Project.

The Mayor and council also revisited the Pool Meeting held on Wednesday, April 10. The Pool Meeting proved to be extremely productive as the City Council and the Hi-Line Future Foundation agreed to renovate and refurbish the City’s 63-year-old Municipal Pool.
