Colgate Country Showdown
Winners of KMMR’s annual country music talent show Friday night at the Malta High School auditorium were Tricia LaBrie, first place; Third Wheel, consisting of Daniel Morton, Kerri Morton, and Jeremy Beasley, second place; and Vince Mace, third place. LaBrie received the $500 prize and the opportunity to compete in the state competition in Great Falls. Second place was $200 and third $100. A total of eight contestants performed two numbers each.
Three Penguins compete at State C
The Whitewater Penguin track team advanced three athletes to the State Class C Track Meet in Butte last weekend.
The weather that they were presented with was nothing new, as many of the northeast Montana spring track meets are much the same – snow, wind, and cold!
Joe Wilcott, a Senior Penguin, finished out his high school track career with two personal bests. He competed in both the javelin and the discus, throwing a 125’0” in the javelin and 124’2” in the discus.
Logan Messerly, a junior, was prepared to compete in the 200 and 400-meter dashes. He came out of his blocks with great force only to have both of his races inhibited by a strained hamstring.
“We are looking forward to great things from Logan next year as his times going into the state meet looked very promising,” said Coach Heather Simonson.
Kourtney Simonson, a freshman Penguin, competed in both the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter run. She also clocked personal bests in both events cutting a second off of her 400, and five seconds off of her 800.

City approves cost proposal to dig a new well
The Malta City Council recently approved a cost proposal of $37,641 submitted by Jacobson Drilling for the drilling of a new well near St. Mary’s school.
The new well will replace an existing well located just feet away which has lost its pumping capacity over the years because of deterioration of the well stem.
In addition to the payment to Jacobson drilling, the city will pay for approximately $15,000 in materials associated with the well.
The council also agreed to delete a portion of the cost proposal which had been submitted by a Havre plumbing company for furnishing and installing piping, fittings, and valves. Barry Damschen, of Damschen and Associates of Helena, the engineer who prepared the specifications for the new well, said the cost for that portion of the job was out of line.
City officials plan to see if they can get a local plumbing business to do the work.
Malta places six individuals, on relay at Class B meet
Malta’s thinclads placed twice as many athletes in the top six as the year before at the Class B state track and field meet last Friday and Saturday in Great Falls.
As a team, the M’ettes were 10th with 16 points, although they were in a tie for second after Friday’s action. The Mustangs finished 20th with seven points.
Although the highest finish this year was junior Kim Wiederrick’s tie for second in the high jump, many athletes had a personal-best performance at the meet.

Saco Hosted Successful High School Rodeo
A highly successful District 1 high school rodeo was staged by the Saco Roping Club at its arena north of Saco over the weekend.
Rodeo officials report fine attendance, good bucking stock, and ideal weather for the two-day rodeo.
Two Malta students won the all-around titles. Babsie Bishop was named all-around cowboy, and Diana Robinson all-around cowgirl. Runners-up were Bim Strausser of Harlem and Becky Hanson of Jordan.
Debbie Tams of Malta was crowned district rodeo queen with Glenda Cusker of Wolf Point as the runner-up. Miss Tams will represent this district in the queen competition at the state high school rodeo.
Qualifying for the hard-luck awards were Roger Dale Ereaux of Malta and Edith Breitmeier of Harlem.
The top three winners in each event advance to the state high school rodeo to be held in Malta on July 8 and 9.
Gene McCracken Administrator of Hospital
The Phillips County Hospital Association announced this week that Gene C. McCracken of Poplar has been hired as the new administrator of the Malta Hospital, succeeding Elmer Hendrickson who submitted his resignation to the board several weeks ago.
McCracken is presently administrator of the Community Hospital and Nursing Home in Poplar. He will assume his duties in Malta on about July 10.
McCracken is a native of Montana and worked for the Great Northern Railway in Bainville and was also in private business in Culbertson. He was administrator of the Culbertson hospital for about six years before he moved to Poplar. He is married and they have one daughter living at home. She will be a high school senior this fall. The other McCracken children are older and living away from home.

Summer Play Program For Malta Kids Gets Started
Malta’s summer recreation program, directed by Coach “Bun” Lodge, got underway this week, somewhat delayed by rain the first of the week, but with all equipment ready and plans for the entire summer mapped out.
Equipment has been set up on three playgrounds in the city and organized play for children from pre-school age up will keep some 500 children occupied most of the time. Coach Lodge is planning baseball games between teams of various ages and there will be softball, basketball instruction, tennis instruction, and other sports.
Mrs. Kate Smith will be in charge of the younger children and will work out a schedule of supervised games and play hours.
654 Telephones Now In Service In Malta Area
A substantial increase in the number of telephones in service in Malta and its vicinity has been made by new construction this spring. The Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company announces that approximately 654 telephones are now in service in the area.
Two rural lines have been completed this spring, two to the former resettlement labor units north of Malta, and one east to the stockyards.
Telephone lines constructed in the past year have given much-needed facilities to the rural areas adjacent to Malta, it is pointed out by officials of the company.

- W.P. Stapelton, county extension agent had organized the county to fight a threatened grasshopper invasion.
- Fred J. Wilhelm, a young World War I veteran, was accidentally drowned in a stock water reservoir near Harb.

- Brother “Van” Orsdel had dedicated the new $2,000 Methodist church at Hinsdale. A number of Malta people attended the services.
- Mrs. Louis Hirskowitz and two daughters had joined Mr. H. in Malta. He had recently opened a clothing store here.
- Nick Schmitz had sold his wool clip of 16,000 pounds for 16 cents.
- Peter LaFond was preparing to open a confectionery and fruit store in Malta.
- George Chambers Sr., of Livingston had purchased the Backues Mercantile Company and was holding a sale to dispose of the stock on hand. He planned to restock with a full and modern line of hardware and furniture.
- Peter A. Clark had installed a second chair in his north side barbershop.
