Walleyes Holds Annual Camp

The Malta Chapter of Walleyes Unlimited hosted their annual Camp Walleye event on Friday, June 16.

"The weather held up and I think that all of the children caught fish, at least one on each boat," Malta Walleyes Unlimited President Jay Boardman told the PCN. "It was a great day."

A total of thirteen young anglers and a few extra deckhands attended the event. The group had a total of seven boats.

Boardman wasn't able to join in the fishing festivities because he, Darren Demarais, Trevor Simser, Rhonda Dalby, Gretchen Boardman, and Sandy Carnahan had to put together and installed a new dock at Nelson Reservoir.

"We put a new dock together, pulled the old one out and pushed the new one in," Boardman said. "It needs a few modifications but it looks really good and I hope everyone can enjoy it."

The dock was purchased with funds that Malta Walleyes Unlimited raised through their annual banquet.

"We were able to raise enough money in the last couple of years to pay for the dock," Boardman said.

They knew it was time to get a new dock a couple of years ago after trying to patch up the old one.

"There is not much of it now, a lot of the frame is broken," Boardman said. "We pulled it up and out of the way for now. We left it in case we need a backup or if something with the new one doesn't work out."

The day for the campers and captains was kicked off at Westside Restaurant for breakfast. The group then headed off to Nelson Reservoir.

After the fishing day was over, the boat captains instructed the campers on how to properly filet the fish.

"We try to make sure that every kid takes home a few filets in a bag so that they can share with family," Boardman said.

After the work was done, the group went to the lot between The Mint and Family Matters, where Pete Dalby grilled and served burgers, beans, and more.

"We appreciate the people who helped with our fundraiser, all the sponsors that we had, the people who donated items for us to help raise money, and the members that we have who continue to help out and support what we are doing," Boardman said.
