Over that span of time, Mandeville said he often thought or scrapping the project altogether. "There were times where I thought about just quitting the painting," Mandeville said. "It was really difficult and very time consuming. I had to paint with it on my knee with my foot on a toolbox the whole time so it was a little awkward."...

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Mar 11, 2015

Deadlines loom. It’s time to get your ducks in a row. Or more specifically, your deer, elk, fish and bears. Unless you’d like to see yourself featured on an episode of Wardens, make sure you’ve purchased a new fishing license before you make another cast or drop another line. The new license year for Montana hunters and anglers began March 1. And while warmer weather and rising fish are just around the corner, don’t forget that it’s also time to apply for special elk and deer permits. The appli...

  • Non-qualified retirement plan common 20 years ago

    Mar 11, 2015

Dear Editor, A quick note to the good people of Phillips County about the monthly retirement check I get from Phillips County Hospital that ended up on the front page of the PC News last week. When I came to Malta 20 years ago, the hospital did not have an employee retirement plan at all. The hospital management company (Lutheran Health Systems) I worked for before coming to Malta had one. When I took the job in Malta, I asked the board to consider setting up a small retirement plan for me. The board did that -- public decision, open meeting...

  • Former Director of HLRC clarifies some issues

    Mar 11, 2015

Dear Editor, As a former director of the Hi-Line Retirement Center and after attending the meeting I have a few comments and questions. If the money is raised as hoped for, who will be in charge of how the money is spent? I would hope it would be handled by the full hospital and nursing home boards and not by one person. I have heard a lot of comments by people who have not been to the HLRC or to a board meeting. Go to a meeting. Both sides need to be heard. Does the public know of the services offered? Skilled care, where you get almost total...

Dear Editor, Open letter by Bill Fisher (Traveling Wolf): I was born on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation in 1943. This 1855 Treaty signaled the first written claim to all Fort Belknap land aquifer rights, et al to maintain health, life and hunting. In 1855 the Blackfeet Nation lan...

  • Field trip to PCN office scheduled...now what?

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Mar 11, 2015

What could more exciting to a group of high school aged, young adults than a trip to the local newspaper? Watching water drip from a faucet comes to mind. Listening to Grandpa snore would be an option. What about the rip-roaring good time known as insurance seminars? The list goes on and on, but when Malta High School’s Ashley Pankratz -- who teaches English and Creative Writing -- asked if she could bring a group of students to the offices of the Phillips County News, who was I to say “it will bore them to tears?” On March 20, these stude...

  • Saddle Club seeks public comment on barn at Trafton

    Mar 11, 2015

Phillips County Saddle Club is seeking public comment on what we should do with the saddle club barn at Trafton. The barn is in need of some TLC. A new tin roof is needed because the shingles are getting really weathered, leaks are starting to show up and the snow load has caused the trusses to sag. The electrical all needs to be updated. The drainage around the barn creates a sheet of ice in the barn in the winter time. The toe of the flood dike is about four feet up on the back wall of the barn. The leaf and vegetation debris against the...

  • Lady Panthers take second at State Tourney in Missoula

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Mar 11, 2015

The Saco-Whitewater-Hinsdale (SWH) Lady Panthers ended the season on the same note that got them to the 2015 Class C State Championship game in Missoula, and that's with ferocious defense. The team faced a 13 point deficit against the eventual champion Gardiner Lady Bruins, and brought it down to one point late in the fourth quarter. Ultimately a lack of fast break points and foul calls cost the team as they fell 55-48 to the Bruins. On the way to the championship game, the Lady Panthers...
