    CROSS COUNTRY MALTA MEET The Malta M-ettes Cross Country team ran well in their first meet of the season, which also happened to be their home meet. The Malta Athletic Club Invitational was held at the Marian Hills Golf Course last Saturday. Malta's Mystic Striker, a sophomore, who struggled with an Achilles injury lead Malta, who as a team took 3rd place with 86 points. Winnett-Melstone won the meet with 64 points.     In the Malta Mustang's home opener, it was supposed to be a clash of Mustangs as the team took on the Shepherd Mustangs last Friday in the team's Homecoming game. What really happened was a Shepherd beat-down as Malta won the game 28-0. The team was led by a stout running effort, compliments of senior tailback Allen Williamson who broke away for two touchdowns and 176 yards on 22 carries.     The Malta M-ettes showed no mercy against the Harlem Wildcats during their home opener held last Thursday. The team did drop a game to Chinook last Tuesday, September 8 and another to Poplar last Saturday. In their win against Harlem, the M-ettes played fierce and at times seemed untouchable.     The North Country Mavericks had an excellent weekend picking up a win against the Brockton Warrriors on Thursday night in Hinsdale and another win against Class B’s Harlem Wildcats in Harlem on Saturday night.     The Dodson-Whitewater Harriers had a completely new team at the Malta Athletic Club Invitational held last Saturday at the Marian Hills Golf Course.     Malta’s Junior Varsity and C-squad both won their matchups against Harlem on Thursday night during the team’s home opener.   • First things first with 'Freedom' mural

    A public meeting held at the American Legion Post 57 to discuss the changes to the “Freedom” mural near the underpass on Highway 191 had about 10 people in attendance and a plethora of ideas were discussed for a new mural. At the end of the meeting it was decided that the first things that needs to be done is to have the existing mural soda-blasted and the concrete underneath needs to be sealed before the colder weather hits Phillips County.   • Spray, branches and noise at council meeting

    Mosquito spraying coming to an end, branches around town to be cut down and a disagreement about races held in the city were a few of the items discussed at last week’s Malta City Council Meeting. Malta Mayor Shyla Jones said that the mosquito spray truck will soon start spraying every other day – barring a big rain – and as the buggers start to disappear the truck will make the rounds once every three days.
