Prizes for women

Women of Montana can compete exclusively for $1,600 in prizes at the Montana State Fair this fall. This is in three divisions of culinary, fancy work and fine arts. No bar is made to women exhibiting in other divisions however and if a woman rancher of the state raises the best wheat she is eligible for the $1,500 auto wheat prize.

Malta News

Tuesday evening Deputy Sheriff Nelson arrested a certain Malta young man for fighting on Front Street and he was placed in the county jail overnight. This fellow has been sowing his wild oats about long enough and this is not his first escapade. The officers have been very lenient with him in the past but from now on we understand they intend to show no mercy, and he will be dealt with according to law if arrested again.

Bird Exhibit from Bowdoin at Falls Fair

A cage of young pelicans, a pair of great blue heron and a group of double crested cormorants that inhabit the islands of Lake Bowdoin, National Wildlife Refuge, are among the attractions that will be found in the wildlife building at the North Montana Fair in Great Falls this week. The birds were sent by B. M. Hazeltine, refuge manager for FWP service of the Department of Agriculture.

All three types of birds nest on small islands in Lake Bowdoin.

Crowd enjoys Sports Day Celebration

A large and enthusiastic crowd from Malta and the surrounding county enjoyed a day of competitive sports at the American Legion Health Plunge Sunday.

In the diving contest, Bill Campbell won the high dive, back dive and placed third in the swan dive.

The men's distance race produced a winner in Kaluza of Saco and Beryl Stotts won first in the men's backstroke.

Pete Dobson, piloting a pre-war, Interstate automobile was unopposed in the ancient car race ...Don Chase won the free for all horse race. Place was taken by Billy Simanton and show position by Aaron Chase.

Lambda Chi Crescent Girl

Myrna Mangis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vern Mangis of Malta, was crowned Crescent Girl of Epsilon Delta Chapter of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity at the White Rose Formal. She will reign until next Winter Quarter. Myrna is returning to Montana State University in Bozeman as a sophomore, majoring in commerce.

Edgar Lee Expects to attend 50th Anniversary County Fair

The latest report is the Steve Holman talked to Edgar Lee of Conrad by phone and Mr. Lee says he will be down for the Phillips County Fair which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Mr. Lee is one of the oldest fair managers in the state. Everall Holman will meet him at the Conrad Airport Saturday morning to fly him here for the big event.

Agreement being drafted to help fund PhillCo Council

The PhillCo Economic Growth Council won approval from county commissioners Tuesday to have an agreement drawn up which will eventually send approximately $35,900 to the organization which is dedicated to fostering economic development in Phillips County.

The money will come from a portion of the proceeds of the Metal Mines License Tax paid in Phillips County by the Zortman Mining Inc.

Zortman's namesake is coming back home

After spending 72 years buried in a pauper's grave, Pete Zortman is finally coming home to the community nestled in the Little Rockies that has borne his name since almost the turn of the century.

Oliver Pete Zortman, who built and operated the first gold ore mill in the Zortman area, died of cancer on July 9, 1933 and was buried in a pauper's grave on July 18 in Big Timber.

Zortman's remains will be disinterred August 23, by a group under the direction of Dr. Jim Curtis of Malta and then will be reburied in the Zortman Cemetery on Saturday. August 27.
