100 years ago

June 22, 1916

Little Rockies News

Mrs. Homer Health of the post office store, assisted by Mrs. Riley Brooks, served ice cream through the day and evening. Also Mrs. J. Dewar and Mrs. Forest served lunch and ice cream. The hotels and rooming houses were filled to over-flowing and with the dance at the hall and the music rendered by the Dobson band, it was one of the best celebrations Zortman has had in years.

In the bucking contest the 13th, first money was won by Orson Williams of Chinook and second money to Roy Long Knife.

West Brothers Show

The well known show comes to Malta for one performance only, Tuesday, June 27, in a mammoth tent seating 2,000 people. The principle feature being the great drama of the Mexican border, a Texas Ranger showing life on the Texas plains, sports of cowboys, burning of settlers' cabin, attack on U.S. fort by Mexicans. Every patriotic citizen should see this show.

June 19, 1941

Dr. Setzer breaks arm while playing table tennis

While playing table tennis in the basement of his home Saturday evening, Dr. G.W. Setzer had the misfortune to break a bone in his left elbow when he slipped and fell on the cement floor. Dr. W. Bradley attended the local practice while the Setzers were in Great Falls Sunday and Monday where Dr. Vasco treated the injured arm.

Seven are selected for induction into Army June 25

The local draft board has announced that seven men from Phillips County have been called for induction into the U.S. Army June 25. The men will leave for Fort Missoula the morning of the 25th.

Those who have received the call are Wilber Dwight Skinner of Wagner, Francis Benedict Williams of Landusky, Carl Kristian Gjersing of Saco, Clarence Hoime of Phillips, Rolland Ira Hullinger of Malta, Stewart Edward Kirkaldie of Dodson and Irwin Morris Munson of Dodson.

Beavers doing damage will be deported, says Warden Cosner

Exile is staring into the faces of local beavers which are doing damage on farms and ranches in this vicinity, according to a notice received from the Montana Fish and Game Department by Harry Cosner, deputy warden. The department has recently authorized trapping the animals where landowners file complaints and the beaver thus obtained will be moved to primitive areas or to new locations where landowners request that they be installed.

June 23, 1966

Bar, steakhouse, café grand opening this weekend

Two newly-redecorated and expanded businesses in Malta, the Stockman Bar and Steakhouse and Smith Café, will have their grand openings this Saturday. The Stockman is owned and operated by Elmer Mayhew and Mr. and Mrs. Gail Smith own and operate Smith's Café.

The three enterprises are located on the east end of Front Street. The steakhouse and Smith's Café are now in the store formerly occupied by the Coast-to-Coast store, but vacated by them when they moved to the building used by Safeway for man years. The property is owned by Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Jacobson.

Whitewater seeks chance to play here

Malta football and girls volleyball teams could have some Whitewater faces on them next season.

The Whitewater Board of Education recently sent a letter to the Malta Board requesting that their students be allowed to try out for the two sports which are not offered at their school.

Mike Hammond, a Whitewater resident involved in the request, said some students there have expressed an interest in being able to participate in the sports.

Boos makes Honor Roll

Boos listed, who graduated from Minot State University with a BA in Marketing/Management, has earned the honor of being listed on the President's Honor Roll for the spring quarter.

Greg is the son of Tom and Karen Boos of Malta.

Country Showdown

The 2006 KMMR Colgate Country Showdown lived up to its reputation, providing some foot-stomping Country music at the Trafton Park Arena Saturday night.

The contestants were Kaytie Korte May, Kayla Messerly, Ceri Demarais, Jessie Jimison, the Gairrett Sisters, Chase Hill, Kaycie Stiles, Charlee, Ann Sautter and Amber Harms.

Charlee, a 17-year-old from Billings, was selected as the winner of the competition with Stiles coming in second and Harms in third.
