Slip sliding away

On Friday afternoon children of various ages squealed with glee as they shot down a huge waterslide into a shallow pool at the bottom.

As quick as they went down the slide, the were climbing the structure's stairs for yet another trip down.

The newest craze in Phillips County is the Salsbery Bros. Waterslide. The brothers -- Cordel, 14, and Cash, 12 – bought the slide about two weeks ago and have spent their time since then setting it up, taking it down and in between having a lot of fun.

"Just the thought of not having the other one around made us think it would be a good business," Cordel said. The "other one" Cordel referenced was run by Curtis and Bonnie Starr and has been gone from the area for at least the last seven years.

The boy's mother, Janessa, said as far as she can tell, the boys had the right idea.

"They have over 25 bookings already," she said.

Cash said that the slide is an ideal summer job for him (better than mowing lawns anyway) and Cordel added that the best part of the job comes in the form of the time they have to spend with the inflatable building.

"You take it, blow it up and drop it off and then go do something else," he said (though on Friday, that "something else" was accepting an invitation from the party's sponsor to play on their own slide.)

Janessa said that the slide has only been set up in Malta so far, but added that the brothers have had inquiries from as far away as Havre and they are hoping to rent it out to groups holding benefits.

"We'd like to help with fundraiser and rent the slide at a very reasonable rate so they can make the money they need," she said.

The Salsbery Bros. have the slide completely insured for liability and the boys, who have an LLC, own and run the business on their own. Though being the owners of their own business is fun, it also comes with a lot of hard work. Cordel and Cash agreed the toughest part of the gig is generally at the end of the day.

"Taking it down," the brothers said in unison. They explained that once the slide is drained of water and deflated it weighs in excess of 450-pounds. In order to protect their investment, the brothers clean the slide after each use, but have found a way to make the tough work fun.

"We go down it with towels to dry it up," said Cash.

"It's a fun way to clean," Mom added. "They wish cleaning the house was that easy."
