New fire truck here, ready for tests

Malta's Christmas present to itself is the new American-LaFrance Foamite Corp. fire truck, has arrived here last Friday and was delivered to the City Hall station where it awaits tests by factory representatives before those representing fire underwriters. The new truck will not be fully accepted until the prescribed trials are made, Fire Chief Jack Lang said.

The new truck has a 500-gallon per minute tank, a body to carry 1,200 feet of hose, 4 ½ inch suction hoses and a 100-gallon water tank mounted on a 157 inch wheelbase Ford chassis with cab and 95 hp Mercury engine. An outstanding feature of the truck is the center flow pump, a parallel series two-stage type centrifugal pump.

War Chest games net $47.40 proceeds

Three high school basketball teams of this County staged two games in the City Hall Monday night under the sponsorship of Phillips County Post NO. 57, American Legion, and net proceeds amounted to $47.70 were turned over to the Phillips County Community War Chest. Peter Hoagland, who managed the event, said that $55.55 was grossed and expenses amounted to $7.85.

Malta Mustangs won both games, defeating Dodson 44 to 25 and Saco 37 to 28 in the doubleheader. Coach Edward Hollister started his A squad against the Coyotes who lacked experience but who otherwise put up a stirring battle. Aggressive Celestin Durocher came out high as point man for the Mustangs with a dozen markers.

The second game was unusual in that 26 of the 28 points scored by the Saco Panthers were made by Bob Lucht who had a banner evening in dropping in the 13 field goals from all points on the floor. Malta's scoring was evenly distributed with Lloyd Lefdahl making 10 to lead the Mustang parade.

Breipohl youth has close call in gun accident

Though details are lacking it was reported last Monday afternoon that Herman Breipohl Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Briephold, of North Saco narrowly escaped death when a gun in the hands of his younger brother, Danny, discharged and the bullets struck him in the neck.

The shot narrowly missed severing the jugular vein and cutting other important chords and arteries. The young man was brought here for treatment and is making a good recovery.

Possible 2,000 to 4,000 year old campsites may affect Bear Gulch Road paving

A potentially important archaeological site discovered somewhere along the Bear Gulch Road has thrown a monkey's wrench into a project which would pave the dirt road in 1993.

What appears to be a series of Indian camps dating back 2,000 to 4,000 years is giving new ammunition to some critics of the road project.

BIA Area Archaeologist Marvin Keller told the PCN and that the site is "pretty important and unusual for the Little Rocky Mountains." Keller won't identify the precise location of the potential find in order to protect it from the curious.
