100 years ago

June 14, 1918

Judge John Hurley sentenced two men found guilty of stealing horses to 6 to 14 years each in state prison.

Miss Anna Lee Survant returned from Washington D.C., where she attended National Park Seminary the past school year.

Earl Beavers, Raymond Veseth, Violet Veseth and Luther Gabriel apparated on the program for the Children's Day observance at the United Brethren Church.

Several New ordinances were passed by the City Council. Cars were not permitted to park on the south side of Front Street. There was to be no more turning around in the middle of the block. Speed limits were 8 miles per hour on corners. Children under 16 were not permitted to drive cars. Harry Cosner was named to enforce city ordinances.

The Stonesifer blacksmith shop burned to the ground despite the efficient and speedy arrival of the local firefighters.

June 10, 1943

Local boy awarded honorary rank in aircraft

Monte Rothie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Al Rothie of Malta, has received the honorary rank of cadet aircraftman from the United States Navy, Bureau of Aeronautics of Washington, D.C. The award was made on May 28 and is "in recognition of wartime service in making in accordance with specifications approved by the Bureau of Aeronautics of the United States Navy scale model aircraft for use by the government of the United States."

June rain equals that of last year so far

Rain for the first 10 days of June has totaled 3.11 inches. This compares to 3.13 inches for the first 10 days of June last year and has raised hopes of a repetition of last year's excellent crop.

Rain during May of this year fell far short of last year's. Last May in the US reclamation office Recorded 1.49 inches while these years rain total the 1. 7 inches.

38 more men leave for duty with Armed Forces

Thirty-eight more men from Phillips County will leave with the June selective service contingent, according to the information from the local board office.

Included in the contingent will be 10 volunteers. Among this group is Bungro B. Ochitani, Malta's only native born Japanese youth. Volunteers are Ochitani, Joseph P. Judge, John A. Judge, Glenn A. Flom, James G. Monroe, Arnold Sandefur, Hector Durocher, Robert M. Scriver, Don Chase, and Douglas M. Bishop. Scriver has been director of the Malta Mustang band for the past three years.

June 6, 1968

Mrs. Hilbert wins car...

Mrs. Mildred S. Hilbert of Malta was the winner of a 1969 Rambler AMX. In the 16th annual "happy home values" sale. Her inquiry was submitted by Bob Jacobs Plumbing & Hardware of Malta. The announcement of the winner was made by the Montana Hardware & Implement Association yesterday. A total of four Rambler AMX Coupes were given as the grand prize to lead off a list of over 1,500 valuable merchandise prizes that were awarded in this nationwide sale. Over 1,700,000 entries were submitted and Mrs. Hilbert's name was drawn from this group.

Texas cattle again roam Phillips County rangeland

70 years ago, Texas cattle were brought up the trail to Montana to graze on the open range and fatten on the prairie grass. Starting in the early spring and plodding north at a rate of 10 or 12 miles per day, the trail-worn critters reached Montana in the late summer.

This spring a Texas "trail heard," in excess of 6,000 head, reached Phillips County. Traveling in three decker "possum belly" trucks, the cattle, all yearling whiteface steers, were on the "trailer" from 30 to 36 hours. Not months or a few miles a day prodded by cowboys, tortured by flies and dust, lack of water and being "spooked" by sudden fear of storms, but hours.

Plan to attend the all-Indian Rodeo

On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, June 7, 8, 9, in Zortman, Mont., an all-Indian Rodeo will be held featuring twilight shows on Friday and Saturday, a Sunday performance, concessions will be for sale on the grounds and a dance will be held on both Friday and Saturday nights on the rodeo grounds. A prize will be given for the oldest Indian couple.

Bennita Bell, 18-year-old Assiniboine from Lodge Pole, Mont., was chosen as Princess to Reign at the Chilocco Pageant in Oklahoma.

June 9, 1993

Voters reject sales tax

With 73-percent of the eligible voters turning out to cast ballots, Referendum III which would have given Montana a 4-percent sales tax was soundly defeated in Phillips County as well as the entire state.

In the county, not one of the 14 voting precincts gave the sales tax passing.
