County Spelling Bee Contestants decided

Phillips County Spelling Bee February 6 at Malta Auditorium

Saco

The County of Phillips was buzzing with spelling bees last week as Dodson, Malta, Whitewater, and Saco all held school events in preparation for the County Spelling to be held in Malta on Wednesday, February 6 starting a 2:30 p.m.

Saco

At the Saco School Spelling Bee, eighth-grader Teegan Erickson was crowned champ after successfully spelling "worship" and "ensure" in the eighth round of the event, topping Abby Yeska who took second place. Erickson and Yeska will head to County Bee next week with classmates Jocelyn Brown, Marshall Caves, and Carter Pippin and alternates Laynee Simpson and Blaine Downing.

Erickson claims the crown a year after her older sister, Jaycee, took first place in Saco. Teegan said she was both excited and nervous going on to the County Bee and said she didn't really practice for the event, adding that her favorite subject is Science.

"I will study more words," Teegan said of how she will prepare for the February 6 event.

Dodson

Junior Stiffarm, who took second place as a sixth-grade student at the Phillips County Spelling Bee last year, will get another crack at the crown at the 2019 installment of the event as he won the Dodson School Spelling Bee for the second year in a row, besting classmate Jeremiah Henry in round 12 of the event. Stiffarm won after correctly spelling "banishment" and "penalty."

"I think finishing in second last year will give me some confidence this year," Stiffarm said. "I am still going to practice though."

Dodson students joining Stiffarm and Henry at the County Bee will be Alexis LoneBear, Sonny Cole, Jazlyn Flansburg, and alternate Mason LoneBear.

Whitewater

Whitewater Public School crowned Kendall Scheffelmear as the school's Spelling Bee Champ after correctly spelling "miniature" and will be joined by classmates Harmony Wood, Austin Hanley, Kendra Cummings, and Sommer Green (who finished 2nd-through-5th) as well as Kora LaBrie and Kennedy Simonson who will attend the County Bee as alternates. Last year, Hannah Hanley won the Whitewater and County Bee and this year's young Penguins will once again try to bring the title home this year.

Malta

In Malta, Kaille Davis was crowned school spelling champ and will head to the County Bee with classmates Morgan McEwen, Michael Mayer, Layla Messerly, and alternates Straud Sims and Trooper Stiles on their home turf when the rest of the county schools come to town next week.
