Malta City Council Recap

As concerns about speeding automobiles around the City of Malta continue to worry local residents, Malta Mayor John Demarais asked the Malta City Council to consider budgeting for the purchase of mobile, radar speed indicator signs that could be used at trouble areas around the city, including parks, daycares, near schools and on Highway 2 near Dairy Queen.

Mayor Demarais showed the Malta City Council Aldermen printed pictures of the signs similar to ones used in Glasgow, but smaller than those used when entering that town from the West.

“I went and talked to the Sheriff’s Department in Glasgow and they said they really seem to help out,” Mayor Demarais said. “They are not permanent, and are small enough to be moved around.”

The radar signs cost approximately $6,000 and no further action was taken after the discussion.

During the Public Works portion of last Tuesday night's meeting, Malta Public Works Director Jim Truelove reported that the Malta Municipal Pool will be closed for the season in roughly three weeks so work can begin on revamping and updating that facility's bathhouse. Director Truelove said that the pool was suffering from some clarity issues earlier in the month, but those problems have been remedied, and the water is as blue now as it has ever been.

Director Truelove said that street sweeping and alley blading is coming along nicely in the streets and alleys of Malta, but added the street sweeper has a bad sprocket and that has slowed some of the sweeping work.

Mayor Demarais said that mosquito spraying continues in the evenings in Malta, but added that high winds the last couple of weeks made spraying impossible and reminded everyone that spraying cannot occur in the evenings if the temperature is over 80 degrees.
