The area community has worked tirelessly in supporting activities at the Malta Senior Center over the past few years. The Malta Senior Center is made up of volunteers as it is a non-profit organization. When an event is held at the center, funds are earmarked for a special project. The furnace is an example as it was almost entirely funded by grants and donations. After that successful project, the center had gutters installed this fall to alleviate ice forming on the sidewalks. The American Red Cross blood drive was held Thursday, December 1, 2016 at the Malta Lutheran Church with a very successful show of blood donors even with the holiday season upon us. There were 55 presenters for possible donations with three deferred resulting with a of number of 52 successful donors. The Malta area once again met their goal with the most precious gift of all: blood. Malta Senior Citizens hosted a successful Soup and Bread event October 29, which allowed them to take two steps forward and only one back. Malta Ready Mix poured the sidewalk and curb this past week to complete the repairs from the broken water line. An FYI: When you, as a respectful citizen, see yellow tape and the City’s orange posts signifying DO NOT CROSS that is exactly what it means. Malta Senior Citizens seems to be doing a dance as they work to increase their funds towards remodeling the kitchen. The furnace is installed and paid for with grants, memorials and fundraising. Next, a water line broke however, the Center was able to stay open through the graciousness of Malta Glass allowing the Center to access water from their business. Thursday, September 15, 2016, the American Red Cross had a very productive blood drive with 57 presenting, resulting in 51 usable units. For various reasons, six presenters were deferred but are urged to continue trying to give the gift of life, blood. A one gallon pin was given to Carol Brown and Bryan Raymond; Terry Lodmell and Eric Wilke were presented with two gallon pins. The Malta Senior Citizens hosted several meals, a Christmas potluck, numerous donations and was awarded a grant to earn money towards the new furnace and central air system. It is now a reality and the Center will host a summer potluck Saturday, July 16 from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The Center will provide the hot dogs, buns, condiments and refreshments and ask that others bring salads or desserts. The chair exercise class will resume Monday, January 18, 2016 from 10-11 a.m. at the Malta Senior Center, 110 1st St. W. The Anne Pringle Burnell Stretch, Strength, and Yoga DVD’s are low impact designed for Seniors. Sit and Be Fit, is a set of four DVDs hosted by Mary Ann Wilson, RN. Each Monday a different 20-30 minute DVD will be used. Reservations are not necessary; simply come when you are able. Thursday, April 30, the American Red Cross will conduct a blood drive at the Malta Lutheran Church from 11:30 to 5:30. It is not too late to call 1-800-695-7258 to schedule an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome at any blood drive.
