  • Painting the Night

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Dec 14, 2016

A total of 17 soldiers stand at attention, strategically placed around an old wagon sitting on 40 acres pinched between Sleeping Buffalo and Saco at 4 p.m. The sun is setting in the east and surrounding the soldiers are two snowmen, a dozen candles which read "noel" down their sides, and, of course, Mr. and Mrs. Claus. If you didn't know to look at them, you would fly right past on Highway 2 at this time of day. In an hour, when it is nice and dark, it is a different story. "Maybe 100,000...

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Dec 14, 2016

When Malta High School freshmen Bonnie Jones and Ben Costin were filling out applications for the Governor and First Lady Leadership Council conference last October, neither of them thought much more about it after they were done. "I didn't think I was going," Jones admitted. "I thought they would choose some of those 5.0, IQ guys," Costin added. About two days later, a letter from First Lady Lisa Bullock arrived letting the two know they were picked and cordially invited to attend the Helena...

  • 'I can't quit you'

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Dec 14, 2016

I have a bad habit I can’t seem to quit. I listen to the Voices of Montana radio show at every opportunity. Billed as conservative talk radio, the show regularly offers one-sided arguments from every right-wing nut job willing to speak to smarmy host Jon Arneson. I seldom listen to the end of the hour. An admitted masochist, even I have my limits. I’ll stay tuned until my eye begins to twitch and I start to stutter. “Can you bbbbbelieve what that sssstupid sssson of a ggggun just said?” I’ll as...

  • Saving vs. Selling Souls

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Dec 14, 2016

It is a little over a month since the 2016 Election and it seems as though big surprise… Liberals and Conservatives are still arguing. Big surprise, right? I don’t know what it is about the human psyche that makes people think that they are better than the other. Whether race, neighborhood, religion, career, social status, political belief or whatever, people tend to think that they are not only better than the other but also have to voice their opinion saying so. What gives one the entitlement...

  • Town of Dodson cracks down on water, sewer fees

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Dec 14, 2016

The Dodson Town Council is going to be more strictly enforcing their monthly water and sewer fees following a very expensive and difficult week of finding outside help to fix a broken shutoff valve. Last week, the Town of Dodson was forced to turn off a customer’s water due to non-payment. In the process of turning the shutoff valve back on after the payment was made, the valve broke, in part because of an aged water system. “This was not the customer’s fault,” Mayor Cole said. “But, having to continue to turn these valves off and on is not co...
