There was a time at the Phillips County Museum when a visitor was unable to manage the stairs leading to top floor exhibits, they would have missed out on an expansive section of history dedicated to Phillips County and northeast Montana. The Phillips County Sheriff’s Office announced this week that they are seeking approval on a mill levy which would lower the rate that landowners pay per year verses prior levies and generate more funds for the office. If not passed could severely handcuff their efforts to be proactive. The sheriff’s office is asking for an additional $51,739.90 to be added to the $98,300 that has been approved since 2002. The Malta and Dodson School Districts held school board elections last week, both of which elected two new trustees to fill spots. The Saco School District did not have elections, as thyereceived only enough write-in intent declarations to fill two seats, but they named two trustees to their school board as well. Mrs. Simanton's third grade class took some time last Friday to go outside and fly kites at Murray Field. But this wasn't just a random relaxing afternoon away from the classroom. Her class earned it. "It's a group reward," Stacy Simanton told the PCN. Every third quarter they get to earn a reward. It's kind of a tradition." The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks announced last month that it is scaling back plans to establish a free-roaming bison herd in the state. That should come as good news to hunters after ranchers across Montana pulled more than 300,000 acres out of the Block Management program last fall in protest of FWP policies. Justinn Marshall, Saco, rodeos for the University of Montana Western, at Dillon. The last college rodeo of the regular season was held this past weekend in Missoula. Justinn ended the year with 463 points in Breakaway Roping which placed her 1st. She was awarded a beautiful buckle and saddle. Marshall came into the final rodeo sitting 4th in Goat Tying. She split 1st in the long go, with a 9.0, then placed 3rd in the short go with a 9.5, which also put her 3rd in the average. She ended up with total points of 592.5, which bumped her into 3rd... Deepest sympathy goes out from our community to the Moore/Dunbar family on the death of Scotty Moore. The funeral was attended by an outstanding large group of people paying tribute to their friend. Carol Lumsden and Dixie Stordahl attended the viewing and sharing of memories of Scotty on Friday. It is a good way to hear the memories of friends and family that are different than mine. Each year Phillips County Motorsports awards four $500 scholarships to area graduating seniors interested in automotive or welding. This is the seventh year and to date 26 scholarships have been awarded. In 2014 a total of 10 applications were received. David Weaver, son of Charlie and Cheryl Weaver of Dodson and Parker Prellwitz, son of Fritz and Thea Prellwitz, Malta, are the local recipients. May 12, 2004 10 Years ago *Debby and John Hunt retire from the Dodson School District. John is leaving the school after 22 years of service and Debby is leaving after 18 years of service. During his 22 years, John saw his cross country team win the state title and Deb was the assistant cook at the school for seven of her 11 years. *Joshua Roberts graduated with honors from Air Force Base Training at Lackland Air Force Base. Eleanor June (Green) Garlinghouse, Age 76, passed away of congestive heart failure on May 1, 2014 at Penrose Main Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Eleanor was born March 24, 1939 at the old Malta Hospital in Malta, Montana. She was schooled at South Wagner and Malta, graduating from Malta High School in 1956. Louis W. Klimper, 87 of Billings, Montana passed away at RiverStone Hospice House on May 5, 2014. Lou was born in Butte, Mt. He was the second of six children born to Dorothy and Max Klimper. Lou spent his early years running around the Little Rocky Mountains in Zortman, Montana. He always called Zortman "God's Country" and enjoyed returning as often as possible. William (Bill) Ernest Marks passed away May 10th, 2014, at Valley View Home in Glasgow, Montana of natural causes. Bill was born March 11, 1929 at home East of Saco, Montana. He attended school at Saco up to the 10th grade. Bill's father had a heart attack and Bill needed to tend to the family farm full time. Bill met Christina Ellen Mix in the fall of 1947. Sean and Shelby Moore of Malta announce the birth of their daughter, Lili Grace Moore. Lili was born on Friday, April 18, 2014, at 2:46 p.m. at Northern Montana Hospital. The Extension Office has received call that army cutworms have been found in some winter wheat. Producers are encouraged to look for feeding on the above ground vegetation as an indication of army cutworms. Army cutworm larvae are nearly two inches long when fully grown, generally colored light gray with lighter markings and a pale stripe running down the back. Dodson, Whitewater and Saco all had junior high teams present at the Whitewater Invitational last Thursday. Dodson's seventh and eighth grade squad consisting of Tyrese Messerly, David Jaynes and Stephen Ereaux put up 45 points at the meet, which was good enough for fourth place.
