Filed under local news: If the weeds along some of the sidewalks of this place are not cut soon, the people will have to get out a search warrant in order to find the walks. It’s a case of too much weeds in Malta.

Also: Thos Facey and Harry Cummings have rigged up fly traps and are grabbing the winged pests at the rate of a gallon a day. If everyone in the ton would do the same thing in a few weeks, there might be a noticeable decease in the fly population.

Early History of Malta: by Mattie T. Cramer

Away back in 1892, the school district, which was no. 2 of old Valley County, was bonded $1,000 for school purposes, there being at the time only ten pupils. The first school was held in a building owned by Wm. Lowell, which stood on the corner now occupied by the brick block of Arthur Cavamaugh, in which Ralph Nelson has his auto repair business. It is the kitchen of the Lowell’s home where the children gathered to study. Arthur Cowan was employed as the “first” teacher of this little group of boys and girls. Miss Hattie Berry and Mildred Edwards followed, respectively.

As near as old time residents recollect, a list of names of the first pupils attending the first school in Malta followsEthel Legg, the present Mrs. Claude Moore; Martha Taylor, now Mrs. Geo. DeFlyer; Jennie Davidson, now Mrs. Byron Hurley; Mable Tucker, Maggie Harmon, Tom Mayberry, Lige Hyatt, Andrew Green, Benny Phillips, George Clark and a boy named Whipple.

Headline: New Bus loading location

Malta Elementary Principal Rich Stuhlmacher has moved the bus loading location to the front of the school this year in hopes of creating a safer situation. Motorists are reminded that it is illegal to pass a parked school bus which has its “Stop” sign extended. Parents are also asked not to park on the east side of Third Avenue East when dropping off or picking up children because it will encourage them to a run between the buses, creating a safety hazard.

Headline: ‘Good Old Days’ theme for Saco’s 41st annual Fun Days

Yes, it’s that time of year again and it is continuing a new fourth decade for the Saco Fun Days this Labor Day Weekend.

Hard to believe, but a year ago Saco’s Front Street was undergoing a considerable update with new sidewalks, curbs and highway.

Most residents agree it was a very successful project and a great improvement oto the city.
