  • Equity Co-op to celebrate 100th with expansion

    Mark Hebert|Apr 6, 2016

The year was 1916, not even a year after Phillips became a county, that a group of businessmen decided to open Equity Co-op in Malta. According to Montana Secretary of State Linda McCulloch, there are only 27 businesses and organizations still operating in Montana that registered with the office in 1916, Malta's Equity Co-op is among those 27. To celebrate their 100th year in business – which officially takes place on November 9 of this year – the location is expanding its floor space to off...

    Apr 6, 2016

On March 31, 2016, Ed Amestoy, Phillips County Attorney, attended the Montana Parole Board Hearing to provide testimony in opposition to the Parole of Criss Case. Case was convicted of deliberate homicide, aggravated kidnapping, and robbery in the November 1978 robbery and triple homicide which occurred at the Loring Bar. The parole board denied the parole request noting that Case was complicit in the execution of three people and parole at this time would act to diminish the seriousness of the offense. At the hearing, testimony revealed that...

  • Saco's Stahl announces run for MT Senate

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Apr 6, 2016

Wayne Stahl, a resident of Saco, has a long career in public office, and if the votes go his way at the Republican Primary the first week of June, he said he hopes to use that experience for the betterment of Montana as a whole. “I always intended to run,” said Stahl. “My terms didn’t work out and I termed out in the (Montana House of Representatives) and it was four years until I could run for the house…I always had the intent to do it though.” Stahl’s history of politics, finished when he termed out of the House of Representativ...

  • Nope, sky is still there

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Apr 6, 2016

I heard that the sky is falling so I decided to take a look. But I return home disappointed. Expecting to travel over barely passable roadways through dangerous, crumbling cities filled with angry, disenfranchised Americans, my wife and I found instead a country little changed from what we saw two years ago on our last 6,000-mile road trip to Florida and back. Oh, there were some differences. We saw more “Now hiring” signs than ever before. And not just at fast food restaurants and con...

  • Give Peace a Chance

    Wade Sikorski|Apr 6, 2016

Senator Steve Daines came to Baker, where I live, to talk about, as he put it, a “war on coal.” His visit was part of an energy tour leading up to an Energy Expo in Billings, which he organized on behalf of the fossil fuel industries. As the days have passed, and I have thought about what was implicit in what he said, I find myself increasingly disturbed by how he and other politicians, like Ryan Zinke, Tim Fox, Greg Gianforte, and Donald Trump are framing environmentalists. Global warming is an established fact. Climate scientists are just sho...

  • He'll be the odd man ow!

    Jimmy Reed|Apr 6, 2016

Although Dean and I were only in junior high school, we had already acquired hoodlum habits. We decided it was less trouble to do wrong than right, and more fun, so we devised a coin flipping scam to beat our schoolmates out of their lunch money. Operating on the five-flip, odd-man-out-wins-all principle, we two con boys lured suckers in and contrive to have our coins land on heads and tails, insuring we’d win the third guy’s money. We repeated this four out of five flips. On the fifth flip, we made certain both of our coins landed either tai...

  • Am I a salesman?

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Apr 6, 2016

I’m pretty excited about the summertime… I got a new grill. Well new to me. For the past couple of months I’ve been hoping to upgrade from our small 14-inch table top charcoal grill I bought last summer. Yes I prefer charcoal to gas. Gas grills serve their purpose for sure. It’s great for quick and timely cooking but I just love the flavor of smoked meat. It brings me back to my childhood. My dad always used charcoal. No matter what our food options were living in the Chicago land area, I alway...
