  • Malta High School graduates 34 students

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|May 27, 2015

"This is not the end. But it is perhaps the end of the beginning," Principal Scott King said reciting the motto of the 2015 graduating class of Malta High. The mood was joyous at the 2015 Malta High School Graduation Ceremony held at the Malta High School Gymnasium. The bottom floor bleachers were nearly packed out as hundreds poured in minutes before commencement. This year's class produced 34 graduates, each of which have been strong contributors to the school's history. King started the...

  • For those about to Rock!

    Mark Hebert, Editor|May 27, 2015

"The best AC/DC cover band I've ever heard? There was an all-girl band in America, Hell's Belles." – Angus Young, AC/DC Malta's Greg Smith is a huge Rock 'n' Roll fan and he can't remember the last time a rock concert came to town (aside from Nonpoint playing an acoustic set in his backyard in March.) On Saturday, June 6, following the First State Bank Car Show and a slew of other events in Malta, the AC/DC tribute band Hell's Belle's will be playing at the Milk River Pavilion and, according to...

  • Hate for certain critters

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|May 27, 2015

There’s a lot of hate out there. And it’s not all directed at members of the human race. Forget cops and thugs, Muslims and Christians, liberals and conservatives. This isn’t Ferguson, Mo., Baltimore or New York. Folks out here are on the fight over critters. But it’s not just grizzly bears, bison and wolves that raise our tempers. We get fightin’ mad about birds and fish, too. Sage grouse top the list. For reasons no one completely understands, the birds are vanishing from much of their his...

  • Malta resident shares poem to make you stop and think

    May 27, 2015

Dear Editor, This is the truth. I would like others to have the chance to read this. It makes you stop and think. Don Wombold, Malta Today, I will not answer the radio call that your boyfriend has come home drunk and is beating you again. Today, I will not answer the radio call that your 16 year old daughter, who is very responsible, is four hours late coming home from school. Today, I will not answer the radio call that your store has been robbed or your house has been burglarized. Today, I will not stop a drunk driver from killing someone. I...

  • Rep. Mike Lang Montana Legislature Update

    Rep. Mike Lang|May 27, 2015

The 64th Montana Legislature is almost in the books. History will formulate the decisions that where made into a true factual scenarios. I enjoyed the session Yes there were long hours, steep learning curves, enduring decisions. I supported and objected to bills that I feel are best for my constituents and Montana. Some have become law and many have not. 1187 bills were introduced, 592 died in the Senate and/or the House. The Governor has the final say on the remaining 595 bills. I served on three House committees this session. In Business &...

  • The best cookies I have ever tasted

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|May 27, 2015

Well, I just found out that America is no longer the fattest nation in the world. That unfortunate title, according to a National Geographic, belongs to our neighbors to the south. I have to say that when I look out the window and see so many people running, walking or riding a bike, it makes me smile. In a generation ran by electronic devices, it seems our country is still trying to put an emphasis on staying fit. In some cases they have even invented “wearable tech” that tracks your ste...

  • Summer of fun, 2015, shoot me an email, eh?

    Mark Hebert, Editor|May 27, 2015

This past Monday, in honoring our veterans on Memorial Day, we kicked off a summer which promises tons of fun and lots of events for the staff here at the Phillips County News to cover. The summer of 2014 hit me like a ton of bricks. I was not prepared for the amount of events that would occur last summer in Phillips County. As you are well aware, I was transplanted from the mountains of Mineral to the Prairie of Phillips last year and I was not prepared for the volume of events that took place in my new home. A summer in Mineral County as the...

  • Malta Masons place 150 Masonic Markers at Malta Cemetery in memoriam of past members

    Sarah|May 27, 2015

This is the second year the Masons have placed the Masonic markers at the Malta Cemetery. Interested in preserving the history of the Free Mason, the Malta Lodge #57 started doing research on past Masons and created the markers. Greg Oxarart pounded down a Masonic marker on Thursday, May 21, in Memoriam of past members. Russ Osmundson and Dennis Broadbrooks checked the list and map to help locate more past members. Some markers are easier to place because many have the Masonic emblem on the...

    Mark Hebert|May 27, 2015

The popcorn will be fresh, the cola ice-cold and the silver screen illuminated this summer at the Villa Theatre as the movie house moves into a new summer schedule of showing two different movies each week starting in Malta this week. "The movie companies didn't want to let us show two movies a week because we are a small town theater," Vikki Truelove, owner of the Villa, said. "Because we are a small town, the movie companies don't really care about us, but we are trying to show them that we...

    Mark Hebert, Editor|May 27, 2015

On July 1, the suggested donation price for Congregate Meals for Phillips County Seniors will go to $4 after many years of being at $3. Mary Lou Broadbrooks, Phillips County Health Nurse and board member on the Phillips County Council on Aging, explained that the suggested donation price is being increased because the bids from facilities that provide the meals continue to get higher each year. "It has probably been at $3 for at least the last 10-years," Broadbrooks said. "The program is open to anyone 60 years or older and their spouses.” L...

  • Whitewater News for the Week of May 27, 2015

    Helen Austin, PCN|May 27, 2015

Whitewater School gym was packed for graduation! A nice lunch was served after the ceremony. The North 40 hosted a party with music and fireworks! Good luck to all the grads. The school year has ended for the students. It reminds me of the years I taught at a school for the handicapped in Havre. I also taught piano for 30 years, I did daycare …mostly after my own children had graduated and left home. It is a glad, yet sad time. Late congratulations to Sloan Lafdahl on his art award from the USDA...

  • Story written in 1981 tells of former Malta resident's time in the US Navy during WWII

    May 27, 2015

Editor's Note: This story was written by Paul Dunscomb in 1981 when he was a senior in high school. Dunscomb interviewed Harry Carpenter (a former Malta resident) when Carpenter worked as a janitor at Ossining High School in New York. The story was brought to our attention by Harry’s son, also Harry, who still lives on Malta. Carpenter passed in 1996 after moving to the area in 1988 and Dunscomb is now a professor in Anchorage, Alaska. The story is reprinted here with Dunscomb’s permission. Ever wonder what it might be like to lead a dou...

  • Schmoeckel surprised by pleasant plaque honoring service

    Mark Hebert, Editor|May 27, 2015

Though she has been "retired" for nearly six months, Carolyn Schmoeckel keeps herself busy and continues to garner awards for her mantel. At a recent Malta City Council meeting – the same meetings that Schmoeckel sat in on for 14 years as Malta's Clerk and Treasurer (MMCT) – it was announced that she had been nominated by her peers at the Montana Municipal Clerk's, Treasurer's and Financial Officer's Association for a lifetime achievement award. Low and behold, she won. Because Schmoeckel was...
