  • Kindle finishes basic training as Honor Grad

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Aug 10, 2016

When Malta’s Kori Kindle enlisted in the Montana Army National Guard in the summer of 2015, she knew she would excel in at least one of the aspects of basic training. “I knew I would max everything,” she said of the physical aspects of training. “I trained a lot before I went there. I enlisted in June of 2015 and that’s when I realized what I would have to do to pass the PT (physical training) test so I trained until I left, which was in February.” That hard work paid off and following t...

  • Sawyer Brown dazzles at PC Fair

    Evie McCorkle, Reporter|Aug 10, 2016

Sawyer Brown took the stage Friday night at the 101st Phillips County Fair in Dodson with a crowd of 1,700 people in attendance, introduced by Travis Rhoads. "I've never really heard of them or the opening act" said Dodson resident, Ashley Scheffelmaer. "But they played very well and were very enthusiastic." Sawyer Brown started their set with a fan favorite called Some Girls Do. This opening song had the crowd slowly forming as so many couples were dancing away. They performed other hits such a...

  • 4-H clubs in Phillips County show animals at 101st Fair

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Aug 10, 2016

This year's 4-H Beef Show featured a couple of playful Charolais steers that wanted to play keep away from even the most experienced 4-H showman. It also featured a repeat champion showman and a Charolais steer that broke the recent streak of Angus winners in market beef. This year's market beef winner was Petrie, who belonged to Malta High Senior Chanel Lett. "I'm feeling pretty good and I'm pretty proud of my steer," Lett said with a smile. She talked about the name "Petrie," which came from...

  • Open Class entries top 2,000 at PC Fair

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Aug 10, 2016

Though officials at the Phillips County Fair knew there would be less exhibitors than last year at the 100th fair last year, they weren’t sure how the numbers would rank when compared to the 2014 event. When all the entries had been judged, ribbons awarded and checks cut and signed, a total of 298 exhibitors entered a total of 2,138 entries. The 2016 Phillips County Fair exceeded the 2014 numbers (231 exhibitors and 1,916 entries in 2014) and came close to the huge numbers at the 100th P...

  • Aluminum recycling underway at MOI

    Pierre Bibbs|Aug 10, 2016

On July 5, Malta Opportunities Inc. (MOI) received a game-changer for their recycling system. The group expected a new, enclosed trailer for can recycling. The trailer, donated by several local companies, will allow MOI to recycle cans more efficiently. "We had the two can containers out front," Kathy Ereaux said. "They weren't enough to consume the amount of cans we were getting." The trailer was sponsored by local area merchants. The Phillips County Community Foundation donated $2,500 and...

  • Welcome back, sage grouse

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Aug 10, 2016

Apparently the sage grouse are back. Following two of years of favorable spring weather, bird numbers have rebounded. There will be a sage grouse hunting season this year beginning Sept. 1 and ending Sept. 30. The bag limit and season remain the same as last year -- two birds a day with four in possession. The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service decided last year not to include the bird on the Endangered Species List. The threat of inclusion on the list had dogged sage grouse for a decade. Sage...

  • Have patience with water project

    Aug 10, 2016

Dear Editor, Helena Sand and Gravel are doing the water line replacement in Malta, I have a residential house on 1st Street West, and am very pleased with the professionalism of this crew. Watching the temporary water lines placed above ground, the gravel ramps placed in driveways for home owner access, and providing vehicle access through the construction. Sure, construction work is an inconvenience. But when the project gets done and the pavement replaced, we are going to have great satisfaction of a renewed water system within a large area...

  • Road warrior vacation recap

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Aug 10, 2016

It looks like we have lost our lone stoplight in Phillips County and to said light I say “you won’t be missed.” I am all for progress, and I know that work needed done, but man, what a pain in the neck that was. Speaking of a pain in the neck – in the name of progress – if many more streets are closed around Malta as the Water Project continues, I am going to need to enlist the help of a Hobbit, a wizard and a band of elves to find my way from the office to my house each night. I am not complaining (much) as I know this work is long overdue, bu...

  • Fat guy plays second

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Aug 10, 2016

Last year the Co-Ed softball league was made to gauge the interest of those around town that were interested in starting a softball league. Though I wasn’t in the group photo, I played for two of the four weeks. Immediately I was put in the outfield as a floater. That didn’t go so well and I found out really quick that I’m out of shape. This season I’m still tipping the scale in the high 200s. Lucky for me I wasn’t put in the outfield in my first game of the season. This year I was thrown on...

We understand Mr. Veseth will in the very near future commence the erection of a $40,000 brick block building on the lots south of the post office and that the building has been rented. It will be one of the substantial buildings of the city. It is not known at this time what will be done with the lots...

  • Powell wins second straight

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Aug 10, 2016

It's no longer a secret to all at last Saturday's Demolition Derby at the Phillips County Fair that Chinook's Garrett Powell is the area's top competitor. Powell is nearing the end of a pretty hot streak after his first top finish of 2016 in Billings last May. He went on to an event in Glasgow and won. He won in the Blaine County Fair and took second in the Valley County Fair. Last Saturday he won his second consecutive Phillips County trophy. "It feels pretty good," Powell said. "There were som...

Last Sunday at the Phillips County Fair was a pretty special day for the Powell family of Chinook as Mike Powell won the AMX races in the afternoon and later Garrett Powell, Mike's son won the Demolition Derby that night. Not only did Mike win the B Main Event in Dodson's AMX Racing. He did so in front of close to a thousand people. The race marks AMX racing's first bump and run event in Dodson this year. • Milk River Challenge

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Aug 10, 2016

The 2016 Phillips County Fair featured some solid bull and bronc riding last Sunday as the Milk River Challenge Rodeo came to Dodson. This was also Allen's...
