  • County residents tell FWP 'no' on bison restoration

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Aug 28, 2015

Over 300 people gathered at Malta High School last Wednesday night during a public hearing hosted by Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks to comment on a draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for bison conservation and management in Montana. The EIS gives four possible alternatives for how to deal with bison in Montana and of the nearly 40 citizens who spoke, mostly people from Phillips County, all but three said that they would be in favor of the "no action" alternative and asked that there...

  • 47th Milk River Wagon Train to conclude with parade, community feed

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Aug 28, 2015

The Milk River Wagon Train will be hitching up the wagons and leaving with their teams from Turner on Thursday, September 3, for a 45-mile trek to Malta where they will be greeted with a parade and then host a community feed. The Milk River Wagon Train is a reenactment of an old west train and 46 years ago, in 1970, Duke Seel called the groups very first meeting to order with 13 of Phillips County's finest in attendance. Most of the men at that first ever meeting are no longer with us and...

  • Albertsons unveils remodel plans during community BBQ

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Aug 28, 2015

The Albertsons Customer Appreciation Day Picnic has been a late summer highlight for the last several years, since the Malta location won "Store of the Year" in 2001. The picnic has been an annual event since that year. What made this picnic different than the others is the fact that at the moment the Albertsons location in Malta is welcoming a new addition. "Hopefully it's going to give us the ability to bring some categories to the store that we've been limited to in the past because of the...

  • Should have been serving road kill

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Aug 28, 2015

I’m a big fan of the restaurant review site Yelp. It’s nice to get a heads up before you order dinner in a strange place. Thanks to Yelp I’ve enjoyed some exceptional dining experiences -- the Hawiiana Cafe in Honolulu, and the Girl and the Goat in Chicago spring to mind. So when I read that the owners of the Red Lotus in West Yellowstone had been busted by the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks for illegally buying animal parts, I Yelped them to check out what customers were saying....

  • I'd shoot them too

    Aug 28, 2015

Dear Editor, In response to the letter from Barbara Schlocker (8/12) in last week’s PCN. I bet she doesn’t have a garden, flowers, fruit trees or bushes. I have all of these. Along with fences, repellents, solar alarm and more to keep these animals out. They eat or destroy more than I use out of my garden. Yes, if I had a gun, I’d shoot them too, if only to scare them off for a day or two. I can hardly wait for the Free Range Bison to join (joking.) Happy hunting, Enid Fewer Malta...

  • Reflecting on the FWP Bison Meeting

    Aug 28, 2015

Dear Editor, After reflecting a bit on the recent meeting hosted by the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks, I thought I would add my three cents of comments to the three minutes allowed by the FWP to the speakers. Here however, you have the choice to quit reading after three minutes if you wish. The Format: The Department of FWP insulated themselves quite safely from any exposure, explanations, clarification, justification, or embarrassment, by allowing comments only and not taking nor responding to any questions from the public....

  • FWP doesn't know the meaning of 'species' or 'native'

    Ron Stoneberg|Aug 28, 2015

How did that line go? What's in a name? A rose would smell as sweet..... It seems MT Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) is following Shakespeare's musings. We no longer hear about 'wild, free-ranging' bison. Now they are being labeled as a 'native species' and FWP is looking for, "somewhere in Montana where animals (bison) could be managed as a native species". Apparently, FWP does not know the meaning of either 'species' or 'native'. All plains bison in North America (federal, private and Indian Reservation herds) belong to the same genus and...

  • Penguins and Panthers and Raiders! Oh my!

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Aug 28, 2015

As I sit at my desk entering the various sports schedules into my Google Calendar Application, I can’t help but get a little excited for the scholastic sports year. One thing I’m excited for is the fact that on various occasions Phillips County teams will meet each other in competition. While I’m excited to see our athletes give it their all against each other, it stinks as well. Instead of cheering for one team at a time, I will likely find myself not cheering at all. I always want our local ki...

  • Dumbest 'hobby' ever?

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Aug 28, 2015

Welp, folks, it is that time again. The temperatures are dropping, the leaves will soon start falling and, most important to me, football season is just around the corner. Though I hate to see summer go, the promise of pigskin makes the proposition palatable. The sound of the Mustang’s cleats clippity clopping down South Seventh on Friday nights starts the weekend off right. The Griz galloping onto the field while the band strikes into Up with Montana on Saturdays marks midway of my three-day football fancy. Sunday is for professionals and m...

  • Zortman's Circle C inducted into Cowboy Hall of Fame

    Aug 28, 2015

One of the oldest ranches north of the Missouri is the Circle C Ranch which was located just east and north of Zortman, Montana. The ranch was formed by Robert Coburn who was born in Ireland. He had emigrated first to Canada, then to Montana where he started out at Virginia City and Alder Gulch in 1863. He mined for gold and other precious metals there. He moved to Last Chance Gulch in Helena where he held three claims that made him from $300 to $400 a day. That was Coburn’s stake to get into ranching. “In 1886 he (Coburn) moved to the old D H...
