  • Long winter relieves drought status, now causing flooding

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|May 2, 2018

As of Monday morning, the high waters of the Milk River started to drop in portions of Phillips County, but the National Weather Service says that floodswaters could stick around through July. "We are going to have a fair amount of water around until at least mid-May," said Patrick Gilchrist of the National Weather Service Glasgow Office. "We will see some decreases, but we are still bucking near that minor flood stage well into the July timeframe so there is some decent potential there for high...

    A.J. Etherington, The Glasgow Courier Publisher|May 2, 2018

The Bureau of Land Management North Central Montana District Manager Mark Albers, spoke to the Glasgow Courier about American Prairie’s grazing. As has been reported in previous editions, the American Prairie Foundation Inc. is attempting to remove interior fencing on their BLM leased lands, fortify the external fencing with an electric wire, and they are applying to graze bison year-round. The BLM’s role in that request began with a scoping period in which the agency is seeking input from the public on what issues, if any, should be con...

  • Lengthy letter objecting to 'change class of livestock,' APR requests

    May 2, 2018

Dear Editor, This letter is to file my total objection to “change class of livestock from cattle to domestic hybrid bison on public lands”. BLM by moving forward is in clear violation of: 1. Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 43, USC Ch.35 “domestic livestock grazing on public lands. (BLM organic act for multiple-use of public lands the public land law of the land). 2. Federal Data Quality Act (DQA) “quality, utility, objectivity and integrity of information”.44 USC 3506 Dec.2001. 3. National Environmental Policy Act of 1969. BLM mu...

  • Just when I think I'm out... they pull me back in

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors columnist|May 2, 2018

I thought I was immune, but apparently, I still need help. I no longer paid much attention to those lists of The Prettiest Mountain Towns in America, or The Safest Places to find your Post-apocalypse Dream Home or even The Most Dog-friendly Towns in America. It was all just click bait and I bit because there was usually a Montana town on the list, and I’m a sucker for Montana towns. Eventually, however, the lists became so generic that nearly every town in the state was included somewhere. Bozem...

  • Box Elder isn't just a town in Montana

    Rosemary S. Veseth, PCN Correspondent|May 2, 2018

At last, spring is in the air! We know this for certain because just as the salmon swim upstream, the swallows return to San Juan Capistrano, the mighty boxelder bugs reappear throughout Phillips County. These little buggers, measuring about a half-inch in length and being mostly black in color with a dash of red, have returned to once again annoy us all. 'Tis beyond me how they manage to survive our harsh winters. We prepped our homes with foam-stripping along the door jam, cover our windows...

  • Phillips County Museum News for May 2, 2018

    Lori Taylor, Museum Curator|May 2, 2018

Another school year is almost over. The familiar yellow buses will soon disappear until summer is over. I recently ran across a story about the Bowdoin bus route I thought was interesting. Prior to 1925, the bus service to Bowdoin School was supplied by a two-horse team driven by Oscar Anderson. In 1925 Mr. Habedank bid on the northern route and offered motorized transportation in the form of a one-ton Model F Truck. The local handyman built a cab and enclosed it with a canvas cover and a small coal-burning stove was added during the winter....
