"We pride ourselves on being different than everybody else while still being entertaining. We like to cater to everybody so the people at the Phillips County...

  • Blame it on the rain

    Jul 20, 2016

Heavy rain over the past two weeks have done everything from knock down crops to postpone softball games. The US National Weather Service in Glasgow reported last Wednesday that under an inch fell in Saco, 1.6 inches in Malta and nearly three inches in Zortman over a 72-hour period....

  • My bucket runneth over

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Jul 20, 2016

Life is too short to drink light beer. I reached that conclusion shortly after my 64th birthday. It was time to come to grips with reality: there just isn’t a lot of time left and I don’t want to waste it drinking Bud Light. Neither do I want to spend it playing Pokémon GO. I prefer to spend what time is left fishing and hunting, raising bird dogs and vegetables, loving my wife, and falling asleep in my favorite chair. I no longer have visions of great adventures although I hope my grandchildren...

  • Is your Health Care better now?

Matt Rosendale, Montana Senate Majority Leader|Jul 20, 2016

It has been just over six years since President Obama signed his sweeping health care legislation into law, subjecting every American to federal mandates. How is it working out? Are your insurance premiums lower? Are your deductibles lower? Is it easier to get an appointment to see a physician? Were you able to keep your same physician? The legislation was passed in such a fashion as to strain the boundaries of the Constitution so severely that the Supreme Court had to decide if several of its components were legal, including whether the costs...

  • Preserving Sage Grouse and Ranching with Conservation Easements

    Bebe Crouse, The Nature Conservancy|Jul 20, 2016

The conversion of native grassland and sagebrush to cropland is one of the greatest threats to wildlife that depend on this disappearing habitat such as greater sage-grouse. A new study projects that, if conversion rates continue as expected, sage grouse populations could drop another 5-7 percent in eastern Montana. But the study also offers a solution. Keep habitat intact by focusing voluntary conservation easements that retain ranching as a desired and compatible land use in areas that are most at risk to new cultivation. The study,...

  • Bonfire in the South

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports|Jul 20, 2016

In this age, some people believe bigotry and racism doesn’t still exist. But in some places it does. I’m extremely thankful for Phillips County because I’ve seen nothing but love for me and my family. Obviously not trying to stir any trouble, I will try to briefly tell a story of me being in a bigoted situation. If you’re not into it, turn the page. Once upon a time I lived in Florida. One of my band mates and I were hanging out with a youth group pastor and a few of his friends. Later that ni...

  • P.C. Museum news for week of July 20, 2016

It was a “gem” of a day Friday, July 10 at the PC Museum. Amateur rock hounds Mitch and Annie Blatter shared their rock, gem, and mineral collection with Phillips County. Hearing of their experiences and seeing the many varieties of rocks I was ready to take to the field and see what I could discover. Historically Montana has long been associated with rocks and minerals. The Montana motto “Oro y Plata” is an indication of the wealth found within our boundaries. To further emphasize our rich mineral and ore deposits Montana is also known a...

  • Memories for the Week of July 20, 2016

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jul 20, 2016

1 years ago July 20, 1916 Closing of old trails There is much trouble being caused all over the county by the fencing of the old trails and the changing of the road to section lines. In some cases this is being done without the sanction of the County Commissioners. The law requires that the new road be put in as good condition as the old before change is made, but this is ignored to some extent so that the new road in many cases is not satisfactory to the traveling public. 15 years ago (1901)...
