  • New County Agent is a Familiar Face

    Kari Hould, PCN Staff|Aug 2, 2023

The Phillips County Extension office has a new face at the helm. The face is not new, however, to the Malta community. Newly hired Phillips County Extension Agent Christina Murphy tossed her name in the pool when Marko Manoukian retired and the State opened the position. It isn't much of a change for Christina, she resigned as the Agricultural Education and Welding teacher at Malta School District, a position she has held for four years to make the transition. Christina described her life as...

  • Delivering Income and Property Tax Relief for Montanans

    Greg Gianforte, Governor of Montana|Aug 2, 2023

As I meet with Montanans in every corner of our state, I hear the same concern often –taxes are too high. And they’re right. Taxes are too high and need to be reined in. Two years ago, we enacted a fiscally responsible budget, and as a result, the State of Montana today has a historic budget surplus. Ultimately, that means you overpaid your taxes, and we’re giving it back to you. When we released our Budget for Montana Families last November, we again held the line on spending, and we focused on providing hardworking Montanans with meani...

  • A Step Behind the Latest Technology

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Aug 2, 2023

I always seem to be a step behind. Call me Johnny-come-lately. When everyone else was wearing Gore-Tex, I was still in leather and wool. When all my friends were listening to cassettes, I was rockin’ out to eight-tracks. While planning a trip last week to North Dakota to get a boat repaired, I sought directions online to the location of Swenson Marine in Bismarck. As I was reaching for a pen and notebook to copy the information from my laptop, a brilliant thought struck me; take a picture w...

For two nights the thunderstorms have been amazing! The lightning was really bright, but the thunder wasn’t very loud. We even got a little rain both nights! It didn’t get measured in my new rain gauge though! I had a bout of stomach flu off and on for a week. I actually went to the ER for an IV to replenish the fluid I’d lost. I thought I was getting well, and it came back and hit me low again. I’m definitely getting better this time! Lu and I traveled to Malta on Monday evening for a GPDM mo...

  • Dodson News for Wednesday, August 2, 2023

    Eldora Henry, PCN Correspondent|Aug 2, 2023

We experienced a short-lived weather disturbance on Sunday with lots of thunder, lightning, and wind but not much rain. We were hoping it would go ahead and rain, the ground top dries out so fast and cracks. As much rain as we were having it is surprising the grass is so dry. Be nice to have all the rain out of its system so as not to disturb the fair. They have really been busy at the Fairgrounds---at the end of the week it will be a beehive of activity. It is supposed to stay terribly hot all...

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Aug 2, 2023

Once upon a time in the early years of the twentieth century, a family of sons decided to look for better work and took off from Michigan traveling west. They stopped traveling and claimed sections of land north of Malta. The father, James Stubblefield, claimed the first half section and received the patent on it in 1916. Then, gradually, each son proved up on a half section close by their father's land. Archie Stubblefield proved up on the half section to the east. As time went on, James' land...
