The Phillips County Coalition for Healthy Choices and Malta Boys & Girls Club are continuing fundraising efforts to complete much-needed repairs on their existing building housed in the former St. Mary’s Catholic School. Weather and wear have taken its toll on the early-1900’s built building, and repairs are needed. This was a busy week in the legislature. Both the House and Senate acted on large pieces of legislation. As we move toward the end of the 66th legislature, the budget is moving along. I sit on the Senate Finance and Claims Committee where were met one day for eight hours to review House Bill 2 – the largest part of the budget. Hundreds packed into the Malta City Hall gymnasium last Saturday night to celebrate the 30th Annual Malta Walleyes Unlimited Banquet with food, friends, and fun. It was a mournful community as several well known members who were Veterans and other long time residents of the area are no longer with us. I was interested to read that the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks wants to kill the smallmouth bass in a public pond in River Rock subdivision in Belgrade. FWP worries that the smallies could be illegally introduced into area rivers and streams. The department plans to replace the bass with rainbow trout. Vernon (LeRoy) Ekedahl, 91, beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother, passed away on March 20, 2019 in Brandon, S.D. LeRoy was born on May 7, 1927 in Chicago. He moved to Malta, Mont., in 1927 where he graduated from Malta High School. After two years of service in the United States Marine Corps he married his sweetheart Doris Marie Miller in 1948.
