Happy New Year! May each of you realize your dreams and goals! Diana Engel and Layne Engel invited me out for lunch one day after Christmas. It was so fun seeing Layne as a father to a two-year-old! Visiting with my previous comrade from the Whitewater teaching staff was the icing on the cake! I’ve received a few calls wishing me a happy new year from friends up north. Carol Lumsden said that Pete had the team out pulling the wagon for hayrides during New Year festivities! Sounds like a lot of f...

January 3: HAPPY NEW YEAR 2024 TO ALL FROM WHITEWATER, MONTANA!! Get well wishes to all who are sick. Happy Birthday to those celebrated in December, including Sommer Green. Over Christmas, there was a beautiful candlelight service at Whitewater Lutheran Church. The church was full, and I really enjoyed playing the familiar Christmas carols. There were many guests including a choir from Malta. They were children and combined with our Whitewater youth to sing. Another I visited with was Scot...

  • A Welcome from District Senator Tempel

    Jan 10, 2024

8 Happy New Year! As I watched the sunrise this first day of the new year, I was reflecting on this past year. Family and friends have all made an impact on Judy and my lives. I am thankful to everyone for the part you may have played in our lives these past years. As our state's House and Senate Districts have been redistricted and will be effective starting January 2025, I will be working with folks from the new area that was formerly Senator Mike Lang's district. I have been fortunate to...

  • A Hunt in the Cattails

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Jan 3, 2024

The ground was white with frost when I climbed out of the truck. It almost looked as if it had snowed. In an hour, however, it would be gone, the ground bare and dry again under another cloudless sky. Dot sat patiently as I fastened the e-collar around her neck. Ace wandered to the other side of the truck, lifting his leg on the tire. I tested the beep on the collar and Dot squealed and started hoovering the grass at the edge of the cattails. Her attention was only a button away. Ace, deaf and...

  • Vacation and Vitamins Made a Difference

    Pierre Bibbs, Play Ball|Jan 3, 2024

This was a weird year. I loved a lot of things about 2023. My favorite thing was taking intentional time with my family. Earlier this year, we took our longest vacation in terms of time and distance away from home. We went to see my brother-in-law Sam Fauth, his wife Mirjam, and their children Noah, Livia, and Sofia. It was awesome experiencing a culture different from ours. It was a trip that our family will never forget. We will also never forget getting stuck at the airport in Denver and...

  • Council On Aging

    Dec 27, 2023

Dear Sir: The Phillips County Council on Aging has a goal of assisting and promoting programs to help senior citizens in Phillips County. Through our programs we have become aware of many local seniors who could benefit by staying in our local community but have a difficult time living on their own. Recently the former nursing home was purchased and remodeled to provide 24 hour care in an assisted living facility. It has just received its Medicaid license. This allows the Rivers Bend Assisted Living facility to accept Medicaid payments for...

  • Washington Hunters Were Under Fire

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Dec 27, 2023

Folks in Malta took the opportunity to vent about the hunting season last week during a visit from the right wing Montana Talks radio show. Apparently, out-of-state hunters — particularly those from Washington — killed what deer were left in Phillips County. This, after they trespassed, littered, and packed the parking lot at the local grocery store. All the evidence was anecdotal which fits the show’s format. Actual facts and figures simply get in the way. While host Aaron Flint and his guest...

  • Spirit of Christmas

    Dec 20, 2023

Spirit of Christmas by Lorraine Seaford Phillips County, Mont. The calendar says it is Christmas. It's cold, and there's snow on the ground. The carolers sing and church bells do ring. Why doesn't my heart respond? A part of the picture is missing, Though the presents and Santa are here. Then why are the colors so faded? The music so flat to my ear? What is it I need but can't locate? What's wrong with my spirit this year? The inward turned ice of depression, Keeps me from all holiday cheer. I've dutifully baked and gone shopping. I've wrapped...

A short story by Helen Austin. Home for Christmas “Oh no, it is blizzarding? If it keeps this up, we won’t be able to go home for Christmas,” wailed Anne, a young housewife, as she stared out the window at the freezing snow blowing across the barren prairie of northern Montana. “Mommy is this cookie pretty?” asked her enthusiastic little girl as she held up a piece of cookie dough slightly resembling a bell. “Oh, that IS pretty,” answered her mother, trying to show interest in spite of the...

  • The Ever Growing List

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Dec 20, 2023

Halfway through the fourth and final month of the hunting season, I’m overwhelmed with a feeling of dread. In a couple of weeks, I’ll no longer be able to answer “Yep” when Barb asks me if I’m hunting that day. Instead, I’ll have to go into detail about the projects around the house that require my attention: the ceiling that’s falling in; the floors that need refinishing; the light fixtures that need replaced. It’s an endless list that keeps growing. But since the first of September, my w...

This is the week before Christmas, and here at Affinity, every day has special themed activities for us to do. On Friday is a Paint with Dixie. We’ll be painting a wreath. Hope it turns out! I’ve been taking advantage of the pool and hot tub here to get some exercise. I know some people in Loring are baking up a storm and sharing their wares. Brandie Stordahl and I baked a couple of yummy snacks on Sunday. I’ll take some cookies down to the community room for whoever would like a cookie with the...

Layla Messerly: "I got an archery bow for Christmas from my older sister and that's probably my favorite; I've been doing that since I was eight or nine." Supt. Steve Bucks: "I remember when I was little, my dad got this great big tree. It would barely fit in our living room, but we had a cathedral ceiling – so it was smack dab in the middle of the living room and we had a little path to walk on each side of it...but we had a T...

  • Moving to the Rugged West

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Dec 13, 2023

Every time I visit Bozeman I’m reminded of why I left. At the time I blamed the opening of a store specializing in nothing but batteries as the final straw. That was nearly 20 years ago. Bozeman has grown by leaps and bounds since then. There are probably a couple of battery stores in town now. Malta, on the other hand, where Barb and I moved, has seen a decline in population, as has much of rural Montana. Newcomers, it seems, may talk about moving to the rugged West, but most of them actually w...

December 6: December hits like a whirlwind with activities each day, sometimes two! I went shopping for groceries and then had lunch with a friend, Rita Frasure, on Saturday! I am not driving right now very much because I’m having some trouble with my left eye. I’ve had two appointments and now am waiting for a specialist appointment. Steve Schuemaker was out for church on Sunday. He will be coming out on the first Sunday of the month for a few months to hold services at the Loring Lutheran Chu...

  • A Tribute to A Friend and Colleague

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Dec 6, 2023

I learned today of the death of my friend and longtime colleague Joan Haines. A reporter at the Bozeman Chronicle for many years Joan followed her own path even if it strayed from that suggested by her editors. As the Chronicle’s features editor, I butted heads with her on more than one occasion. I well remember meeting with Joan and our managing editor in the Chronicle conference room concerning a story she didn’t want to cover. Joan sat down, placed a tape recorder on the table, looked at the...

  • Consider Your Neighbors

    Nov 29, 2023

Dear Editor, I am writing this letter mainly to any Phillips County farmers or ranchers who are considering putting their property in block management. If you do, please consider your neighbors, their property, and their rights and how it will affect them. When the out-of-state hunters roll in, the block management soon becomes overhunted. Some hunters choose to trespass on neighboring farms and ranches to fill their tags. The signs placed for block management work only as good as the people who monitor them. Nothing ruins a quiet morning...

  • Hogs, Perhaps a Money-Making Opportunity?

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Nov 29, 2023

With swarms of feral hogs massing on our northern border, it’s time to take stock of our options. Montana wildlife officials warn against shooting them. Hunting, we’re told, only makes hogs harder to control. Trapping is the preferred alternative. A column I wrote a couple of years ago to that effect prompted a flood of responses. The mere suggestion that feral hogs be trapped instead of shot outraged an entire community of folks who are rabid about shooting pigs. Perhaps Montana should loo...

  • What a Year It has Been

    Kari Hould, Karis Quiet Corner|Nov 29, 2023

Ah, a deep breath and a breather…with the blessings of a calm and uneventful (at least at our house) Thanksgiving Day behind us, we take a moment to look back on the blessings from our bank of memories. What a year it has been in my world…eight months and several days ago, when I attempted a swan dive off my steps, my pace slowed down (somewhat). I am thankful my right foot and lower leg are still attached. I do not think I would’ve made a very good recipient of a prosthesis; surely the good Lord knew not to even test me. I am thankful for t...
