On Sunday, June 28, the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a possible stolen vehicle from 151 S. 2nd Street W in Malta. The vehicle, a 2005 Chevy TrailBlazer, was taken sometime between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. Phillips County Undersheriff Burt Peigneux investigated and found another stolen vehicle in the alley behind the residence belonging to a different Malta resident. That makes a total of three vehicles reported stolen in Malta in the last two weeks, according to the sheriff’s office. Phillips County Sheriff Scott Moran said t...

  • Shirley Says

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jul 8, 2015

Of all the hats that Shirley Blunt has worn in Phillips County in most of the 93 years she has lived here, the one she misses the most is being a ranch hand. "I have been riding horses since I was two years old," Shirley said in her living room on Friday afternoon. "That is the thing I miss the most about living on the ranch." Shirley was born in Malta in 1923, the daughter of Pearl (Watson) and George Aikins. It was a little more than a decade since Aikins has married (1921) and migrated to...

  • Safety savvy

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jul 8, 2015

On Saturday night in Malta's Trafton Park, over a hundred people sat on the hoods of their cars, lawns chairs or simply plopped down on a tuft of grass in order to watch the Fourth of July Firework display hosted by the Malta Chamber (through donations) and the City of Malta. What followed was a brilliant display of high-powered fireworks, which brought hoots and hollers from the crowd. However, it was more than 24-hours prior to the rockets taking flight on Independence Day that the Malta City...

  • Batter up!

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jul 8, 2015

What do you get when you combine 60-plus semi-fit adults with bats and balls and place them all in a field of green? The smart money would be betting on the answer of “hilarity,” but only time will tell. Last week, Malta’s Jo Tharp posted a message on a popular social networking site about the idea of starting a coed softball league in Phillips County for folks over the age of 18. Since then, the response has been strong in favor of such an adventure. “I kind of put it out there that Phillips County needs a coed softball league and I got a lot...

  • Montana didn't use to be this hot

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Jul 8, 2015

I woke this morning to the smell of a campfire. Unfortunately, I wasn’t camping. Smoke from wildfires in Canada drifted into Montana last night. Those beautiful, clear summer skies are gone, and with them the long-range vistas this state is known for. So long, mountain ranges. So long, endless landscapes. Get ready for a summer of smoke, and limited visibility. There appears to be no end in sight and it’s not yet the Fourth of July. It wasn’t so many years ago that smoky summers were a rarit...

The spot is called “The Oasis” and will be ideally located at the fairgrounds, across from the restrooms, the historical building, and upwind from the barns. It will sport a few luxuries that are not always readily available at the fair such as comfortable chairs, s...

  • Medicine has brought out the worst in me

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jul 8, 2015

I rarely get sick. I am allergic to nearly everything, but I rarely get sick. Last week I found out that I was sick after thinking I had a simple ear infection. I went to see the good doctor and found out that, apparently, I have a bacterial infection called “pharyngitis.” Yikes! The worst part of all this was that I am currently on antibiotics. I have never had a high tolerance for medication. One smell of NyQuil can knock me out cold. This amoxicillin stuff is no joke. This antibiotic has giv...

  • July Traditions: Out with the old, in with the new

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Jul 8, 2015

The month of July has always been one of my favorites…I’d say top 11 even (sorry January.) When I was but a whippersnapper, July was spent in Butte, America, celebrating both my country’s independence as well as my Grandpa Hebert’s birthday. Though my family and I lived throughout the country during my formative years, it seems as if more often than not we spent the Independence weekend in Butte eating pasties and porkchop sandwiches, watching Evel Knievel motor down the road during the parade and, at some point, Uncle Karl tossing an errant...

On the way home they enjoyed the display of lightening in the west and it started to rain just as they got home. We had a nice rain so it was wet Sunday. Havre received a terrible blow with rock hard hail and tornado like winds. They experienced destroyed crops, gardens and flowers, broken windows, blown down trees and...

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Jul 8, 2015

The Memorial held by the family and friends of Jean Green raised $500 for the Knights of Columbus. The event awarded twenty-six prizes amongst the 13 teams playing. The smoke smells strong and the sky and air are cloudy due to the terrible fires in Canada and in the USA. If you are camping, please be careful with campfires. There was a retirement party for Lynn Hill at the Lutheran Church. She has worked as secretary at the school for many years. The party was well attended with a delicious potluck. Happy retirement, Lynn! The missionaries, Jon and Dianne are gone. The Wishers are back. There has been Vacation Bible School and a Tent Revival here in...
